Why I’m Cleaning my AK Today

That kind of defeats the purpose of running an AK, does it not? IDK, never ben a fan of the AK so just asking.

Not necessarily. The big appeal of the AK is reliability caused by the piston operating system and easily changed parts. The caliber is usually a side issue.

If "spray and pray" is moot in the US.....let's find out whether it might work better for (U.) soldiers and civilians in Ukraine, while running across an urban/suburban street.

funnelcake: I would not buy a 'nib' AK-74 now, even for $200 - at least not while living in the US, unless the seller also offered 6,000 rds. of non-corrosive ammo at a discount of .35/round. Not kidding.

Right now, .44/round is the lowest retail price for bulk 5.45x39 ammo on Ammoseek.
Months from now it easily could be $1.00-$1.50 / round.
The best of luck to anyone trying to sell an AK-74 without super cheap ammo on the side.

Seems to me that PSA has chosen to become the go-to domestic source for all things AK. I’ve read where they intend to set up a line for X39 ammo production.

Hold tight. Things may have a way of sorting out yet.

Maybe not, American gun owners have a huge habit to fill, I'm sure ammo from other sources will become available. Back when Biden banned the ammo a case of 1000 went to $400, then months later it dropped back down to $320, now it is back up to $400. I have learned that be it with gas or ammo or whatnot those that say "this is the new normal" are usually wrong.

I wish it were true, but being old enough to remember ads for <$100 GI surplus 1911s, GI surplus 45ACP was still like $0.20 per round back then, and $0.20 was still real money, a box of .22lr was like maybe $0.50 if you didn't shop around.

I've enough Russian and Chinese Steel case ammo, I'd gladly contribute much of it to the Ukraine if Biden would give me an export license and assistance with the shipping costs.

Although I sold my two Finnish Moisins a few year ago for lots of money , I bought one of the as almost new 1959 Bulgarin Cold War "last ditch" beautiful 91 Carbines for a couple hundred in 2020 and a Crate of two more ammo cans of heavy 7.62x54 ball for the apocalypse ! I chose to go with a traditional Cooper Scout theme. It is indeed a wonderful tool up to 600 yards , very sustainable. It has a Timney trigger , a bombproof scope mount that by using QD rings gives me the calibrated barleycorn open sights ,Scout sling set up , stripper clip loading and a kinda out of place looking 1.5-5x LER scope with Warne QD rings . I just really need to paint it camo , it seems to work well as is. I will hold 12" groups on a gong on a good day with the heavy Bulgarin ball at 500 yards off the bipod I attach to the QD swivel I fiberglassed thru the front of the stock , on an ideal day for 5 shots . The 100 yard groupings are under 2" , 200 yard under 4 " so I am claiming a 2 MOA scout rifle to maybe 600 yards, good enough and it won't break !
By the way I have two AKs and a Makarov and a Tokarev , and plenty of ammo for each.

I was gifted a Yugo M70AB2 by my son a long while back. I have shot it often in plinking sessions on the mountain and participating in military matches at the rod and gun club. Always gave at least a light cleaning after shooting it. I made a habit of buying 7.62x39 when available at reasonable prices to put. away JIC. I am not so concerned about Russian sources getting cut off. There have always been other sources.

Not worried about it. My SKS and my CZ527 can live on a steady diet of reloads. Someone in the world will take up the slack.

During the early 90s my wife and I built a small brick and mortar gun shop starting with SKS rifles and AK (MAK 90) rifles. 1200 rounds of 7.62 X 39 ammo was about $80 delivered and we sold it for $100 a case. The only rifle I have today that shoots the stuff is one early SKS ChiCom. The irony is I have several thousand rounds of the stuff and have lot shot that little SKS in about 15 years at least. I still have several boxes of the Remington UMC brass stuff with my price still on them, $5.50 a box of 20 for brass cased Boxer primed. Times they are a changing. I don't even know if Winchester still makes the White Box USA or Remington the Yellow Box UMC stuff. Back then I couldn't keep 7.62 X 39 loading dies in stock. I also have a pile of the Wolf and TCW stuff and no clue where it came from. Remember the plastic wrap wooden bullets? I think they may have been East German manufacture. I still have a bunch of those. While they would not cycle a SKS or AK they were fun to shoot single shot.
