Why is the G19 preferred over the G17?

I'm looking at buying a "blue label", either a G17 or G19. I understand that a G19 is smaller allowed easier CCW, but are there any other benefits to it?

This will be a range gun and backup to my M500 for HD. Is the G19 more popular just because its a better CCW choice?

Bottom line is I'll pick the one that fits my hand better but I'd still like opinions.

    Thanks.

Yes, G19 carries better for most.

Buy both. then get a 26 too. Buy lots of mags too. Enjoy :)

To me, the G17 just feels right. It fits in my hand just right, it feels like a natural extension of my body, and that's why I picked it over other models.

I love both the 17 and the 19. The 19 was my first glock. Well, my first handgun period. And probably still my favorite. (Picking up G21 in friday though so we'll have to see :) )
Because I have the 19 I don't feel the need to buy the 17. The extra two rounds don't bother me. 15+1 is plenty for range and carry. If the job cant be done with 16 rounds...well...youre in trouble. I can't carry here in MD so its mostly a fun gun.

I shot the 17 and 19 before making the decision, and I just felt that the 19 felt better in my hands. I have big hands, too. And oddly enough, while I shoot both guns pretty well, I tend to shoot the 19 a little better.

Moral of the story is you'll be happier with either the G17 or G19. I personally feel that the G19 is just a better all around gun because of its size. Probably small enough to carry, definitely big enough for range use. Win.

    i've owned 3 Glock 17s, 2 Glock 19s and a Glock 22

none of the 17s lasted more than a couple of months...i kept thinking i'd made a mistake selling the last one.

i still have one 19 and gave the other to a friend for some computer work

i hate the 22 the most and i'm thinking of turning it into a dedicated .22lr platform

the Glock 19 just feels and points better in my hands. it has that perfect blance, like a Sig 228, that makes it point without effort

i went for the 19 for a slightly diff't reason. in my state, i can only have 10 round mags and the added size didn't make sense to me if i could not benefit from the mag capacity. now, as a range only gun, i'd probably go w/ a 34 and benefit from the added sight radius ;)

Size, capacity, concealability, weight... not many (*if any) guns match the overall package of the G19. Unless you like the 40 then the 23 does.

For me the grip hump on the fullsize Glocks is less comfortable and more pronounced than on the 19. I carried both guns for years as an LEO. The 17 when in uniform and the 19 when I went to a suit. I can shoot both really well but much prefer the 19's grip.

I have found nothing that the 17 can do that the 19 can't.

If Glock had invented the 19 first he might never have made the 17 ;)

i have owned both. I found the 17 as easy to CCW as the 19. I liked the size of the 19, but the 17 is not much bigger and would make a great range gun.

Not every gun has to be used for CCW, just my thought.

I've got a Glock 19 and a Glock 22. I CCW both of them. The Glock 19 is easier to carry.

    I have a 34, 17, 19 & 26. The 19 is shot the least followed by the 17.

Needless to say, if you ever did so desire the extra 2 rounds, a 17 mag will fit right in your 19. Fit in a 26 too.

I have all of those, multiples of most, and a 17L to boot -- one of my G19s is the most shot of the bunch.

Different strokes and all that... ;)

The Glock 19 is the perfect 16-shot pistol. Right height and length for comfortable grip, but also concealable. Short length, but a full-length barrel to get optimum 9mm performance.

    It's just right.

I have had a 19 for years and decided to buy a 17 for a range gun. Right off the batt I shot the 17 so much better. Now I have 2 17's and my 19. The 19 still gets carried all the time. The 19 carries great. I plan to buy another 19 one day just to see if the one I have just doesn't shoot well.

G17 seems awkwardly long to me. I think that's mainly an outward appearance than anything else. They handle fine while shooting. But for self defense usage I don't think the 17 adds much over the 19.

I've always been intrigued by the 19L because I have smaller hands. Basically some people buy a 2nd gen 17 (no finger groves) and cut the grip length to the same size as the 19. It results in a pistol easier to conceal than the 17, with a longer sight radius and smaller grip than the 19.

My experience with the 19's was with the models when they first came out. The grips then sucked, and have changed for the better now. Still, the 17 is only slightly larger than a 19, and you do get more ammo in the gun and better performance from what you shoot out of it, so why not just go bigger. I see no difference in carrying either.

Or better yet, you can pop a 32 round "happy stick" in them all too. :)

The Glock 19 is a perfect all around gun. It carries well it is almost as accurate as the 17 in most peoples hands there is little practical difference in accuracy.

The concealment of the pistol is easy in a large variety of holsters and configurations. All Glock mags are interchangeable and there are tons of adapters to make them semi flush fit.

I think that is a up there in the top 5 Wonder 9s of all time. Everyone should own a Glock 19 and I am not a Glock fan by any means.

That is my personal reason for choosing it. For LEOs (I am not one) the same gun can be used both on and off duty, either plainclothes or uniformed, without sacrificing shootability or being burdensome to carry. You will find agencies like the NYPD doing just that. IMO there is not a more "size efficient" (i.e., smallest that can still hold 15 rounds and is still shootable) handgun on the market.

The G19 fits my hand the best that is why I like it. Others who have bigger mitts prefer the G17. I suppose the G19 is more concealable but that is purely subjective.

I like the 17 better than the 19. It fits me better, shoots better and has better balance.

That being said, I'll give you one guess to figure out what's in my hip holster right this second.

That's right, a G19. It is just so much easier to carry. A pistol doesn't have to feel right or be comfortable for you to use it effectively. If that was the case, Smith and Wesson J Frames wouldn't be one of the top ten carry guns.

It was actually my J Frame that made me sell my G17 and buy a G19. It taught me I could use anything effectively, if I practiced with it enough. Regardless of how uncomfortable it is sometimes.

I don't know that the G19 is preferred over the G17....
