Why no 27-08?

Honestly, I couldn't care less if there were ever a "27-08." I was just expressing my surprise that since it seems every OTHER bullet diameter has been shoved in a .308 case, why not the .277?
Why would someone do that to an innocent piece of brass?

The .277 bore diameter is a handicap and the 7mm-08 already exists.

I would guess that it offers the same advantages as this wildcat I saw on another forum:

Well...

Did some more thinkin' on this.

Thought that maybe a .270 cartridge, on a short case like the Creedmoor, but chambered in a long action, like the 6.5x55mm Swede, so that a heavy 150 gr. bullet would seat right at the neck, and not reduce the powder charge, so you could stuff it full of RL-26 and then cork it, would be plenty sweet.

So I did some measuring and figuring and realized - That is actually the ,270 Winchester!

Seems most factory loadings have the bullet set back pretty deep.

But, if you load a 150 gr. Nosler Partition to the COL max of 3.34"...?

...the base is right at the bottom of the neck.

And P.O. Ackley already determined that "improving" the case capacity by blowing it out and changing the shoulder was a waste of time, because it just used more powder but didn't improve the velocity or performance.

Apparently, Perfect... is.

There is nothing you could do with a 27 caliber bullet that the same size case in 26 or 28 caliber wouldn't do at least as well. I'm not knocking the 270 at all, it is just that we already have way too much overlap in the cartridges we have. With today's bullets and loads the difference between 26 and 30 caliber is miniscule in the real world. There would be no practical reason for a 27-08, but I could, and have said the same about many other cartridges. But if someone just wants to be different then I suppose that is reason enough.

What the frick???

I happen to have not one, but TWO Savage actions. That price is tempting me, and I have the requisite dies already according to their site! Hmmm.

It is...... your Destiny....

I'd be interested in reading about your reloading exploits with that oddball cartridge. $200 isn't bad at all for a nitrided prefit.

Just got my pile of Speer Grand Slam .264/140 gr., and put one up on my display shelf qbove my desk... next to a .277/150 gr. NP.

Same length, and have to mic'em, or butt'em end to end, to tell the difference.

.284 ->.277 is almost half that.

I'm sure the game will be ambivalent as well.

LOL. It just might be! :D $200 to play with a nifty wildcat is probably worth the price of admission. I'm gonna give them a call. I already have a box of 100 150 LR Accubonds and 150 SST's in .277

Yea, but I doubt my shoulder will be. ;)

If I can get .270 ballistics in a short action with less powder and less recoil, why not?

Wait! What about necking the 6.5x55 out to .277 and giving it the Ackley treatment - sharp shoulder, remove taper, use a 65,000m psi rated action: the 270x55, or the 277 SOI (Sven O'Connor Improved), or the 6.8 Greedmore!

That was my original thought.

But then stretched it, to utilize the entire std. length action... and ended up w/ the .270 Win.

Is this how you deal with all the facts and truth you don't like?

...or just mine.

Harrison makes very good barrels, you won't be disappointed.

I've thought about this often as I enjoy the 6.8 SPC, and a 6.8/08 would be a nice yin to my 6.8 SPC's yang.

If you do it let us know how it turns out.
