Wife: Does Arizona have good gun laws?
Me: Yes, it is a very free state.
Wife: If people can have guns why is there so much crime?
Me: That's a good question. I can't answer it:confused:

I'm frankly stumped, what would your answer be?

Would Arizona's crime rate have anything to do with the new law going into effect the end of July. Hint: A law Mr. Obama does not like and has filed a federal lawsuit against. Food for thought people.

I don't know what the unemployment and economic situation is like in Arizona but crime is often linked to a bad economy.
Arizona is a gateway for illegal aliens and drug trafficking. It's very likely that this is the cause of the high crime rates.

Gun laws ultimately seem pretty irrelevant for preventing or encouraging crime. Some states with lenient gun laws (Vermont, New Hampshire, Idaho, etc.) have low crime rates. Other states with lenient gun laws (Louisiana, Indiana, Texas) have high crime rates and often cities that are in the lead for "murder capitol."

California, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, all have extremely strict gun laws yet high violent crime rates. The only thing that doesn't seem to jive is I can't think of a state/area with strict gun laws and LOW violent crime rates.

It looks to me like Az is above average in every crime catagory except forcable rape and auto theft and that was 3 years ago.

The crime rate in AZ has nothing to do with legal guns. It has everything to do with "illegal" weapons and those who use them. Do not be surprised if this gets locked as the AZ crime issue is a much larger social issue and not really gun related.

look at the border and you'll find your answer. People that cross a border illegally don't stop the illegalities once they cross over. It is far easier to live a life as a criminal than to live life as a law-abiding citizen....the reasoning behind this is a lot of criminals don't care if they get caught.....what's not to like; free food, free room and board, free education, free medical, free etc.

Well the last serious criminal event I was faced with was when three local officers responded to a call, and showed up at my door trying to find out who the owner of a car was that had parked across a driveway and blocked another one in... :D

Arizona's crime rates are out of line because of a combination of illegal border traffic and drug/people smuggling. The "immigrants" are responsible for a lot of property crimes, and those behind the drug and people-smuggling business believe in eliminating rivals or kidnapping for fun and profit; and they are not too careful about how they go about it.

Add to that just plain ol’ criminals that cross the border, do their thing, and then carry the loot home…

Border states have more problems than most others. Drugs and other activity concentrated at border penetration sights is part of the problem.

Almost 6000 criminal aliens in AZ prisons right now. Are they the only cause? No, but Phoenix is the kidnapping center of the US due to illegals and border crosser gang activity.
When 1070 beats the court challenge, (even the Democrat AZ Atty Gen who hates the law says it will win), and goes into effect, SB1070 will help lower crime, as well as out "any US citizen can carry concealed or openly without a permit" law...which goes into effect in 21 days.

I think you are misunderstanding her question.

What she means is, if the law abiding can have guns, how can the non law abiding prey on them, as in a high crime rate. We have guns in our home and I have a carry permit, so crime being committed against us, and people like us, should not be easy, therefore the crime rate in our state should be low.

Maybe because the nation just south of Arizona has crime issues that can't be solved by the state of Arizona. Those issues are spilling over into Arizona, but they are not going to be affected by Arizona's favorable gun policies. Only a good, high wall could do that.

Because the law abiding don't carry enough, keeping them in the target catagory. When enough criminals get X'd by legally armed citizens, they move to easier crime. Happened with drive bys many years ago - one drive by shooter got nailed in the pick up truck he was shooting from, and no more drive bys for a year or two. When crime becomes too dangerous to the criminals, they find other crime, or other places.
Yes, the border crossing crime keeps rates up. You can't GIVE land away along the border anymore.

Contrary to what the media like to portray...

  • Crime is getting lower in the United States since the mid 1990's.
  • Except one notable blip right after 2001, crime is generally on the decline nationally.
  • Go see the Uniform Crime Statistics data at US Dept of Justice, and the annual FBI crime report for each of the last 15 years.

So the real answer to the wife is that gun ownership is higher than ever, and crime is on the decline.

Why do the media portray that crime is on the rise?
Don't forget that the media is a business, not a public service. They need to make a profit, just like all businesses. So they inflate, inflame, exaggerate and sensationalize in order to gain readership/viewership. More readers and viewers means more advertising to sell. We need to understand that they are businesses, and that fact will color everything they produce.

Guns don't commit crimes, people commit crimes using guns.

Move those criminal minded people to any other state or country and they would still commit crimes.

Take away their guns and they would be stabbing people with ice picks.

Put them six feet under and you can grow beautiful flower beds.

Crime rates entail a lot of social, legal, political, and geographical issues that are beyond the scope of a forum whose primary focus is simply firearms.
