I just loaded some .223 with my new set of RCBS dies. Nothing I do gets them to crimp at all. As a test i screwed the die in ALL the way. Running the shell holder up to the bottom of the die. I expected a buckled case but instead got NO crimp yet again. Any suggestions?

EITHER THE CASES ARE TOO SHORT, OR THE CRIMP RING IS TOO HIGH IN THE DIE, OR

Perhaps the die does not have a crimp ring.
In nearly 45 years of loading 222rem, 222rem mag, and 223rem I have never used a crimp on any of the catridges and never had any need to do so in any boltgun or the autoloaders. This ammo went through my M4C like shiq through a goose to the point the barrel is shot out and needs replaced as we speak.

you don't need a crimp unless your rifle shoots better with one.

I don't mean to hi-jack. But, this seems odd to me. Why would you not need a crimp to prevent setback?

I was told recently a failure of one of my 9mm reloads may have been caused by not enough crimp, allowing setback.

This is not my thread but I'll clarify just the same. Jerkface was having problems with bullet shaving and tip deformation when seating, so I suggested using his universal expander die to nix that problem. So with a flared case crimping is an absolute neccicity.

I used the bare minimum of flare. And i haven't checked to see if they'll chamber yet. If they do i won't worry about it. If they don't i'll jump up and down and cuss.

Well make shure you go outside first, You wouldn't want to knock everything off the shelves in your reloading shed. OAF!:neener:

Standard RCBS rifle dies don't crimp, so it sounds like they are working as designed. For most rifle cases, flaring isn't necessary. What you need is a chamferring tool if you are having a problem getting the bullet to seat without shaving.

Hmm. I'd better go check mine. I've used an RCBS set exclusively, and I'd have sworn that they did crimp.
