I am used to nighttime gunfire around here, but last night a new and strange sound emerged- a loud "BAM", sequenced like gunfire but with an odd, slightly muffled low pitched metallic overtone. Imagine someone striking a 55 gallon drum with a iron pipe or baseball bat. There was a series of them , with some changes in volume and cadence, and a short. much quieter, rapid- bam bam bam bam bam , exactly like a .22 auto. Am I hearing gunfire coming from inside another house? The nearest residence or barn is about 300 yards away.
I am hoping it was not a home invasion with the volume change and irregular pattern being some tweaker going from room to room... I guess the news will tell.

Think I have it figured, the nieghbors horse is kicking in it's stall, metal sided building. Amazing how loud it is, the barn is about 400 yds away!

If you are near a road it could be the clank of empty dump trucks hitting big bumps. I have heard those a half mile away and they sound like gunfire at first "glance".

My first thought was a horse kicking the crap out of a trailer or stall wall. It is loud and sounds just like shots in the distance.

Go shoot the horse and wait. If you still hear the sound tonight, it wasn't the horse.

Lumber being dropped off sounds a lot like gunshots too.
