Wil Wheaton on guns

In the course of being sucked into the web tonight, I came across Wil Wheaton's web site. (Most folks that I know remember him best as Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation.)

From his "Activism" page at http://www.wilwheaton.net/activismlinks.php:

"I believe very strongly that every amendment in the Bill of Rights should be respected, including the right to bear arms (though I'm not interested in owning a gun, and wish we didn't live in a world where they were necessary.)"

Most of the rest of his activism stuff is way left wing (including that he voted for Nader--has he actually ever read the Green party platform? A lot of it is straight from Karl Marx.).

Oh, well. Nobody's perfect.

I used to sit down to watch Next Generation and start every show by saying: "Maybe the boy will die in this episode."

I must admit that this quote improves my opinion of him somewhat.

meh, based on the rest of the BS on that page. I'd bet he thinks "respecting the second ammendment" means letting people own single shot muzzle loaders. Right after he talks about the second ammendment, he says how he's against the death penalty and thinks the government should pay for healthcare. He then goes on to talk about how he hates both Bushes and complains about how Bush stole the 2000 electioin. Don't forget Sarah Brady says she respects the second ammendment too

I'm the same way, but i don't think anyone is going to argue that i only pay lip service to RKBA.

Liberal gun owners do exist.

Actually, he didn't say anything i don't agree with. (aside from the "not wanting to own a gun" thing...i want to own guns because their fun, though it saddens me that the world is so violent that i feel the need to have them for self protection)

I enjoyed the later developments of the Wesley character. Though he was a bit of a whiner in the begining

He's got his own little thing going on, and I don't nessicarily agree with everything he has to say. Some of it is intresting though. I'm for the death penalty in principle, but not for it's current (corrupt) incarnation. And I of course DO personally chose to own a gun

Though like him I have to say, it does sadden me a little that we live in a world where we do need them.

I would like to see a nation of gunowners (as in; honorable persons who take active steps to protect and provide for themselves and their loved ones), who never have to use them (at least against each other, they're good food-getters too!)

Here's the operative phrase. He doesn't like them personally and has no personal stake in their being legal.

Furthermore he thinks that they're a necessary evil. This implies that he thinks they're necessary either for individual self defense or defense from the government.

That's the impression I get anyway.

I know quite a few gun owners who don't believe that the state has the right to kill someone after the fact.

As to Wheaton's website, you guys really aren't saying anything he hasn't already talked about or heard. He's well aware of the fact that he played probably the most hated character in all of Trekdom. He's got some rather interesting essays and thoughts on being a kid growing up in Hollywood.


Even despite the fact that I vehemently disagree with his politics (C'mon Wes, how can you honestly support a political party that
called for banning dihydrogen Monoxide!) He generally seems more articulate and far less offensive than a lot of other artsy types.

Besides, spending time bashing someone who's views on the RKBA are neutral is really kind of dumb.

Personally, I don't care what his views are, since A) he's only an actor and B) not a very good or particularly likeable one at that and C) any attention at all is more attention than he's been getting for the past nearly 10 years.

I hated Wesley Crusher, too, but not as much as his mommy.

Wheaton, on the other hand, seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders for a "child star." Seems to have come to terms with fame, infamy, and the amazing phenomenon of people who still hate you after you tell them you bear no ill will.

Well, I'm certainly glad that we've all been enlightened by Mr. Wheaton. I don't know if I could have gotten through another day without his amazing insights. Perhaps next we'll hear from the guy who played Steve Urkel, or maybe that guy from Empty Nest. Oh, what tomorrow may bring...

I've chatted with him once or twice. He's a nice enough guy. He took a lot of flak over the Wesley Crusher character and now wishes he'd been grown up enough to take it all in stride. As he pointed out once "Just exactly how much influence do you think a 12 year old had on script writing?" Bashing him for his viewpoints is one thing, but just because you didn't like the Wesley character is silly.
