Wild Hogs

Sorry about my camera mans thumb.
This is a 275 lb boar that we trapped then fed out for a bit , first time he ever saw anybody in his pen and boom!
1858 rem. shorty .457 ball 30 grains fff goex

I finished off a doe mule deer with my 44 Sheriff's navy 44. 30grs FFFg + .454 ball sure did the trick. Besides the BOOM and smoke, it peeled back about 2 inches of hide off her forehead. Obviously it was very close range; one of those "Stand back & plug your ears" sort of things.

Ear shot?
I bought some 240 grn bullets and T7 for hunting because I may run into one of those, though I certainly hope not to be that close!!! :what: If so I sure hope it drops like that!!!

This was from a tree stand at 35 yards with my Ruger Old Army and cast 210 gr. minie balls in front of 40 gr. of 4FG.

****In response to bamaboy

Yes head shot, when we cleaned , skinned him you could put the water hose in his spinal column and water squirted out his bullet hole!
That was # 4 for the Remington , I quit carrying .357 magnum , I ve had to shoot one 4 times at that range to get same results!
.45 acp same distance hog coming fast one shot center forehead they sit down then fall over and quiver.
.457 roundball same results each time.
Most hogs 250 or better but in our large trap and pissed, gates 4 ft I'll stand and let them charge fire right before they jump or ram it!

Patocazador, What size minnie-ball do you use? Do you get the lead waste ring when you set the minnie?
Pancho,

I switched bullets since then. I was using the cone-shaped .456 210 gr. that my mold put out but switched to a Lee mold bullet that is flat-nosed and weighs 255 gr. It's more accurate and more deadly to the game. I used it to kill a small buck about a week ago.

Yes, they both left the lead ring when loading them.

Jim, I hunted wild bore up around Monterey, California, back in the late '70s, I shot a 250# bore and we got just over 160#s of meat off it. The bacon was really good, however the chops, were rather tough, and the hams were really fat, but tasty if I remember right. Further we had the entire bore smoked, before we took 'er home. I believe that is the only way to prepare a wild bore, but I may be wrong, it's happened here before.:D

I've shot 'em in the head with a .22LR from a mini revolver and killed 'em. They ain't bulllet proof. I'd hunt with the ROA and may in the future. Loaded up with a 220 grain cast Lee HP to the max with 777, it rivals a magnum revolver, well, .357 Magnum, for energy.

Bacon? Your correct not the amount of meat as store bought , but way better!
We cut the ribs off and deep freeze the spine for a week or so, then over to the 12" chop saw, inch and ahalf pork choPs! Do the same with the hams. Out back grab some mesquite and cook away. We smoke our own summer sausage too

I mostly grind pork for sausage. I do keep the hams for smoking and the backstrap, of course (AKA pork loin). I keep the ribs for BBQ, also. The rest makes sausage. :D

I trapped this one last year. 9x19 killed it quite dead. I had my CVA Wolf I'd been in the stand with, but didn't wanna clean it. LOL! I normally shoot 'em in the trap with whatever I'm carrying that day. I always have a CCW on me, is part of my clothing whenever I'm dressed. :D

Goex is not available here. Where are you getting real BP? I've not seen any in 35 years on a shelf anywhere and I refuse to order it and pay a hazmat fee. Besides, my ROA loves 777. :D I shoot a lot of Pyrodex P and RS in the rifles.

Anyway, I never carry a BP revolver, usually have the 9 or my .38 or my .357 magnum on me. I've taken several HUNTING with a .357 blackhawk, too, 165 grain Keith style SWC at 1470 fps. It's deadly, too. Longest shot was 60 yards from a tripod stand.

Here's a .357 kill, little pig, I shot out of the trap as I was walking, about 17 yards, head shot.

Moving. Was in Port Lavaca for 30 years, Corpus for 2, now moving to between Sheridan and Rock Island....which is between Hallettsville and Eagle Lake....which is north of Victoria. :D I'm currently in an 18 ft travel trailer in Port O'Connor waiting to close on my house. Sold the one in Corpus over a month ago. I'd be going crazy, but my land is just down the road and I've been shooting a lot. :D

And mcbrides won't tell you over the phone you have to go upstairs to the muzzle loading area and ask then you gO back down stairs and they ask you what your going to use it for then they put it in brown paper sack away from your caps I get a kick out of it!
