Hi folks,

This is actually a request from my dad; he asked me to post online to see if I could find info to help him out.

Dad's got a house up on Lake Superior, and he's got moose, bears and wolves running around it. He'd like to get some pictures, and he thought an infrared "deer camp" scouting photo might be just the thing.

This is one that he's considering:

Do any of you have any recommendations or words of wisdom on the subject that I might pass on to him? Thank you for reading and for any thoughts that you might have.

cheers, erich

A friend of mine has the one your looking at, and it seems to work just fine.

As long as you don't get a 35mm, they're a pain.
The ones with the removable chips work great and if you don't want to scare the critters at night then get one that doesn't use a flash. When I set out my Stealth Cam (digital with flash) I find that the deer actually change their route to avoid the flash every night. Not too good if you want pictures.
The Moultrie that Cabela's has is OK but the cords that hold it to the tree are not well thought out and battery life is a problem. Around here, my neighbors and I use motorcycle/lawnmower batteries wired into the camera. All you need is 8-10 feet of an extention cord and cut off both ends and wire it onto the battery and into the camera. that will last several weeks rather than 2 days.

Go with a digital Cuddeback (www.cuddebackdigital.com) and you will be very pleased. Between my self, dad, and uncle, we have over 2 dozen of these. Originally, I started out with three, 35mm Camtrackers. They are are great, but expensive to buy and operate. The Cuddeback is a workhorse. Most other companies try and copy the cuddeback system. You can buy the Cuddebacks from Cabelas or QDMA (Quality Deer Management Assocation). Also, working with cuddeback's customer service department is first class. I have used many types of cameras, but you will have a tough time beating the value, workmanship, simplicity, and reputation of the Cuddebacks. This might sound like a promo for Cuddebacks, but they have gained our confidence 100%!
