There is what I consider to be a rather strange gun shop in Wichita. He keeps his stock in a back room of a jewelry store and does not have any guns out on display. You have to ask to see a particular gun. He has a great website with good pictures but gun nuts, er fans, er whatever like me often don't know what I want until I see it so he is losing on a impulse sale. :(

There is another gunshop in Howard, Kansas that is in a hardware store. Big website. I am told it is well worth the drive. This is a very dangerous trip for lurkers like me. Howard is a very small town so the O.P.s business plan is solid. Folks in Western Kansas are use having to drive two hours to get somewhere. (You city folk will think you are in the middle of nowhere with no end in sight).

Oh Kansas Conceal Carry License is great for gun purchases. Actual transfer takes all of 10 minutes. It seems strange to me to only be in a gunstore for only 10 minutes so I kill some extra time looking around.

And contrary to what you see in the movies we do not have flying monkeys but we do keep and feed strange politicians in Topeka.

When you get your new FFL, you'll need to be running NICS checks. What I have found is that doing them on my computer is much quicker and easier than phoning them in. Doing them on your computer also gives you a chance to copy the page showing the result of the check. If your customer is 'delayed', you can check any time to find the current status. No waiting for them to call you.

Here's their web site that will give you a start, whether you want to do the phone in or use your computer. https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/nics/resources-for-federal-firearms-licensees

A couple other things you may find useful.

About 10% of my transfers only business is the shipping of handguns. Shipping a handgun by UPS or FedX is quite expensive for most people and my transfer fee plus shipping USPS flat rat priority mail is about 1/2 what my customer would spend if they shipped on their own since they can't legally mail a handgun. All you'll need is some of the priority flat rate boxes from your post office and a copy of USPS form 1508.

Before you ship any firearm, it's good practice to verify that you are actually shipping to a real, and not scam, FFL. It's pretty rare, but it has always given me a little peace of mind. You can verify the validity of an FFL by going here: https://fflezcheck.atf.gov/fflezcheck/

Thank you

Best of luck to you in your new adventure. I would recommend surveying your customers on what they are looking for to get a better idea of services to offer. If you want to offer firearms for hunting around that part of the season, find out what sells in your area. I have always told customers that there are thee choices in business. Price, quality, and service but you can only pick two. I chose to go with service and quality so the price was a bit higher but most of my customers appreciated the other two aspects.
