I read in an informational site that vendors will find you when you get your C&R license and you will be come a "nightmare for your mailman".

Is this true? Is there a way to get a license and not get the junk mail?

In this day and age of junk mail, fax and email, I'm trying to put a lid on it. I have a lot of other important mail going in my personal address and don't want to alienate my mailman further. Thanks.

You should check with BATFE and find out if your license info is easily obtainable or not. IF it might be, check with the USPS to see what might be done to stop junk mail.

How do "they" find you? Does the Gov't publish a list of C&R holders? I don't think so (but could be wrong).

I get no extra junk mail. I have gotten a few small catalogs out of the blue (Sportsmans Guide), but they were "on topic", and not unwanted.

The only way you will get junk mail is if you send your license out to people who then sell your information. I got my C&R and didnt use it for a year, the only mail I ever got were fliers from the ATF.

I think that it is possible to obtain a list of C&R holders, as it is public information. I know that I started getting invitations to the SHOT show not too long after I started using my C&R (i dont count that as junk mail though).

I've had mine for over a year, and I haven't received any junk mail as a result of it.

It's good to hear these personal experiences!

I'm just mindful about mail and never volunteer to be put on mailing lists. I've got businesses in real estate and the Internet, and even without asking for stuff, my inbox is always overflowing every day. Same with my personal box. It seems like you order something once from somebody and boom --- that's the start.

But I know how this stuffs work since my businesses do marketing too, and making a database of prospects is very common. I try to put a lid on being put on a mailing list with regards to my hobbies, though.

Over the past 3-4 months, I have only received catalogs from a few places to whom I had sent a copy of my license.

I do not consider gun catalogs to be junk mail, so no, you don't get deluged by junk mail with a C&R.

My experience mirrors that of others, and I've sent out a bunch of copies over the last 4 or 5 years.

You cannot trust a business not to sell off a list of all the addresses they have OR to 'help out a friend' OR to start another business and use those addresses. A list of FFL holders would appeal to quite a number of vendors.

It happens all the time, your local phone company sells it's list of names and addresses on a regular basis, also your cable company, video store, department store, grocery store and others. There are some companies that seem to think that your buying from them also gives them some license to send you junk mail or spam.

I used to add a different suite number, apartment number, mail drop number or mail stop number etc . to my address. Then when the junk mail comes in I know who to shriek at.

That FFL list would be even sweeter as you can't tag the address to thwart the junk mailers.

For spam prevention I use disposable addresses for new companies and just wait for anything resembling spam to show up. If one does I put them in my blacklist, send them one email, delete the address and don't deal with them for a while. If they don't I then change my email with them to my 'buy online' one.

I don't any longer get as hot as I used to about junk mail. The sender had to waste money to do it and it almost totally funds a lot of rural post offices.

Spammers need to be drained penniless to the point of living in boxes and drinking cheap wine to kill the pain.

The only things I get that I can connect with my C&R are the ATF FFL newsletter and a lot of catalogs from the vendors I've sent my FFL to. However, I do request the catalogs in my cover letter when I send them a copy of my FFL.

Subscribe to a magazine, that will get you a lot of junkmail real quick.

    No junk mail whatsoever.

Only catalogs and sales flyers from wholesalers that I've sent a copy of my license to. I don't consider this to be junkmail as I asked for it and I look forward to it.

    No unrelated junk.

Same as the others. The only unrequested mail I've ever gotten has been the invitation notices to the annual SHOT show, which I actually like getting, though I haven't made it there yet. :)

If you want junk mail, get yourself a student pilot's license -- the FAA apparently opens its records to every aviation related junk mailer in the country.

BATFE does NOT release the names or addresses of C&R license holders. They do list dealers so that shippers can determine if an FFL is valid before shipping guns. Since that information is available, it can be picked up by anyone, but a dealership is a public business so the dealer can't really complain.

I've had mine over a year, no junk mail at all, the only mail I have gotten is from the businesses that I sent a copy of the license to, and that hasn't been very much.

I have had mine for about a year and I get no ATF stuff and not an invitation to the Shot Show. I use mine mostly at Brownells and Midway, so I get stuff from them.

But, when I licensed "RIVER VALLEY TRAINING" with the state, now that is getting me junk mail. :barf:

I've had mind for 2 years and the only mail I've gotten is flyers and updated gun law books from the ATF. No junk mail yet.

Been there, done that. The answer from the USPS is ... "nothing." People (companies) pay money to have junk mail delivered, so the USPS is required to deliver it.

If you wish to avoid junk mail, have a junk address and use it whenever possible so the junk mail goes there.
