I recently polished the slide on my S&W Stigma, it has had problems with misfeeds and jams and the slide has been locking back on half full magazines during live fire. Also my rear sights have always been too loose and the trigger is very gritty. These were all pre existing problems that I thought would work themselves out with use but have not improved. I've reached the point where I want to send it in for work. I lightly polished my slide, not to the point that it's shiny but just so there is a contrast between the raised parts like the striations on the slide, more of a light buffing and I polished the barrel so the exposed "hood" of the chamber is shiny. Do you think they will void my warranty? I've seen polished sigmas sold factory new. What is your opinion on their warranty service on pistols that have been cosmetically altered or their service in general?

typically any sort of "home gun-smithing" will void your warranty........
that being said there are manufactures who advocate polishing( hi-point comes to mind)
chances are unless its extensive, they wont even notice....or will attribute it to normal wear.

I don't think S&W will hold that against you as it has nothing to do with the problems. Call S&W (it's actually pretty easy to deal with them), don't say anything about the polishing, just tell them about your problems. They'll send you a shipping label to send it in.
The repair people will obviously see the polishing and determine whether or not it voids the warranty. You'll get it fixed, and it will probably be free.

I would just send it in and not mention it. What parts of the slide did you polish?

I polished the entire slide, well the outside of it. But you could say more buffed or "roughed up". It's not shiny or reflective but is more "matte" in the hard to reach spots like between the striations below the sights and the edges. My barrel is shiny though, I used some super fine grit sandpaper from an automotive store then wet sanded it with an even finer grit. I like the feel of this gun and it's a good size and weight for me for concealed carry. It is my second pistol, my first being a baby eagle, steel, single action and I'm a very good shot with it IMO. But more of a combination of good eyesight, and hand eye coordination, I'm really into drawing and illustration so I think that helps and the great trigger. So I was naive enough r to believe I would shoot this pistol just as well...i can't afford a new gun, I just had my first kid and the baby eagle is too heavy to carry comfortably and not "print" with a 7 month old in tow. Really want to make this work for me, I'm just sending it in and crossing my fingers.

Since the outside of the slide has absolutely no bearing on function I can't imagine they would deny you. If so raise hell.
Just out of curiousity, what kind of finish is it? Seems like you might have made it highly prone to corrosion.

I may have. I keep it clean and oil it till it's wet with clp for a couple hours then rub it dry with a towel. Supposedly the clp soaks in. I believe it was a melonite finsh. I want to get it painted w moly professionally but was waiting until after the repairs.

You may want to give Birchwood Casey Barricade a look. It's got some studies showing very long periods of protection although i cant recall the exact details.
Send it in. Smith isn't going to mess with you. They will fix your concerns except the trigger. They may well change out some parts. But it will be the same until you do something about it yourself. 
They only thing I've ever seen or heard of concerning slides is if somebody melts one real hard or does a awful job concerning a melted slide. And with good reason IMHO.

Yeah, my trigger did "smooth out". It went from grinding along until I had it pulled all the way back. Now it "smoothly" bumps along until it touches the frame. I can seriously feel 4 distinct bumps before it finishes traveling all the way back. It's like driving over a series of speed bumps. Maybe I can just learn which bump is the last..bump, bump, bump, bump-bang! And that was with some "coercion"
