Will someone give me the "official" or "unofficial" (Jeff Cooper or otherwise) versions of the carrying conditions like condition 1,2,3 etc?

    Thanks.

    Cooper's Originals:

Condition 1: Round in the chamber; hammer back; safety on

Condition 2: Round in the chamber; hammer forward

Condition 3: Empty chamber; hammer forward; charged magazine

Common additions (unnecessarily complicating a simple and useful system, IMO):

Condition 0: Round in the chamber; hammer back; safety off

Condition 4: Empty chamber; hammer forward; no magazine

    I'm pretty sure that's right...

    Condition Five:

Handgun in one locked container, with trigger lock installed. Magazine empty.

    Ammo in another locked container.

    Also known as "condition California".

The unnecessary additions were added by Jeff Cooper to define rarely seen conditions.

twoblink, get Morrison's book. He describes them in detail.

    How about ...

Condition 00: Round in the chamber; hammer back; safety off; smoke wafting from the end of the barrel ????

I think you have Califs cond wrong, I think it goes like this.
Magazine open to the picture of the gun you want, real gun sitting on dealers shelf, you may or may not have ammo for the gun you want already but it would help so you can at least throw it any intruders.

The reason I asked was because I was reading about carrying in condition 3 as a preferred method; it says that because you need to move from muscle memory into conscience decision to rack the gun and then fire...

I'm not sure if that's a great arguement, but something worth considering; also, they said if the gun is taken away from you, in condition 3, you know you have some time before the perp realizes that the gun is not loaded..

    I thought condition California was:

ammo in the glove compartment, in a locked box. Gun in 5 pieces in separate locked boxes in the other car...
