should I consider getting a trigger job? I shot my Swede and my new DPMS AR at the range today and, compared to the Swede, the AR's trigger was gritty and mushy. Will the AR's trigger pull get better over several hundred rounds? Will it approach the Mauser's level? If it's not going to get much better, should I get a trigger job done on it? If so, what do you recommend?

I'm with Chris on this one, I just replaced the stock DPMS trigger with a JP single stage and what a world of difference.

Against the grain as usual...

I say keep it stock. Just make sure to clean your FCG every couple of range trips. Or even better, use a Q-tip or something to clean the contacting surfaces while the rifle cools down between shooting strings at the range...
The stock trigger is supposed to be heavy, but then again, to each his own . My stock Bushmaster trigger breaks like glass after a small mush stage(which I use to my advantage), YMMV.

You can improve the AR trigger yourself if you're capable of pulling the FCG parts, which is really pretty easy. Best part of this mod is that it costs nothing to do and if you don't like it you only need to replace a couple of springs to put it back the way it was. It can't equal a JP trigger, but it's a heck of an improvement over the way it is now.

This made me think of a question that i had.

I want to replace the trigger on one of my AR's. Should I replace the componets, or should I get one of thoes drop in one piece units? What would be the pros/ cons of each?

Jewell Trigger

I am parcial to the drop-in Jewell trigger for the AR. Mine is sent for 3 lbs uptake (travel) and an addition 1.7 lbs let off for a total of 4.7 lbs. Installation was very straight forward (IMO). Excellent trigger for High Power matches.

If you want the very best trigger for a precision AR-15 I suggest this one. It's a bit spendy $279. The adjustment is pretty simple, it will surpass the Mauser's level, go ahead and laugh, I've let some pretty old and very experenced shooters fire my rifle at the range, and not want to stop. My Match grade will hold 1/2 MOA @ 1000yards under ideal weather conditions and California considers this 14lb rifle a "dangerous assult weapon".
