Winchester 1300 vs Mossberg 590

So about a 2 weeks ago, I posted a thread about my 1300 defender jamming when being fed high-brass ammo, I met a gentlemen that would like to trade me his Moss. 590 (not a1) for the 1300 in an even trade with no cash going to anyone. His has a heat sheild and mine has a hogue stock. As far as value goes am i getting a good deal? I mean the 1300 is discontinued so should I keep it for collectors' value or get a shotgun that will better serve the home defense role?

Trade it for the one that suits your needs better. The 1300 has no collectors value as there are far too many of them out there.

It was my fathers so it has some sentimental value although I dont like the idea of my father buying something that didnt work.The 590 does fit my role better for what itll be used for.

I've had several 1300's over the years (currently only have one) and never had a problem with any of them. Is yours an early or late model? I can understand if it has sentimental value why it would be hard to part with. You could always keep it and save up for the one you want.

All i know is that its a defender model dont know when it was made . But Id rest better knowing I had a shotgun that would eat anything i fed it.

Id take a 1300 over any thing mossberg makes.

If it's the defender model with 7 round mag... they are somewhat rare. Did you try the things I suggested in your jam thread?

Price-wise, it's a fair trade.

The Mossbergs I have (two 500's) have tight chambers, but they do have dual extractors. I don't have enough time with them yet to know how much the secondary extractor is going to help with certain ammo though. I am very fond of the 1300's...I wish I knew how to help with the problems you're having with it.

1k, I tried but no luck, and ive used mossbergs in the army never had a problem with the 500s. It is the 7 shot model. I also have a person trying to trade me a remington 870 wingmaster.

If I had the choice and was going to trade the gun off I would definitely go for the wingmaster if it's set up in the configuration you're wanting, but if not the parts are not cheap for the wingmaster. If you like the controls on the mossberg though you probably wouldn't like the 870.

Ive used 870s before and though they were good. So can someone tell me the difference between a wingmaster and 870 express?

I have a Mossy 500 that will fail to extract occasionally on 3" Winchester hi speed steel (cheap stuff). It feeds the 2 3/4" stuff just fine and all lead ammo I've shot in it which ain't much because it's a duck gun. The same Winchester ammo jams a friend's 870 Express in either length. She sticks with Kent on waterfowl. So far, my new to me Mossberg 535 works fine with everything I've shot in it, but I've not used it on waterfowl, yet, just dove so the jury is out on the cheap hi speed stuff for it.

Cheap ammo now days can cause extraction problems in some shotguns regardless of brand. I've heard of folks having the same extraction problems with Winchester's price point dove loads, but i've not seen that do far. No guarantee that the Mossy will function any better with whatever ammo you're shooting. I'd try a variety of ammo in the Winchester first. Ammo could be the problem, not so much the gun. Not sure what your gun's doing, of course. It could also be something a gunsmith could fix. The 1300 is a quality pump IMHO. I wouldn't just up and give up on it until I'd exhausted all other options.

MC, I have used multiple loads in different brands(sellier&belliot,winchester,remington,federal) and have come to the conclusion its the gun. Ive used this gun time and again hoping it wold change but it doesnt.

The express has a cheap finish... the steel isn't mirror polished and blued on the express like it is on the wingmaster and the express has a plastic trigger guard whereas the wingmaster has a machined aluminum trigger guard. The express as I understand it has MIM parts and the wingmaster has certain machined parts like the extractor. Both guns have smooth actions though the wingmaster is exceptionally smooth.
