it is not tapped for scope mounts. I'm not sure why you would want to put a scope on it anyway. if you want a scope get a Marlin

Actually, there are some manufacturers of tang sights that now actually make ready fit even with the tang safety. Check out www.leverguns.com they will guide you to the proper sight.

Marbles produces a Tang sight that can be fit up on these rifles.
I own an ELW 86 and I don't recommend the tang sight because it can become an injury producer with fairly heavy loads.
A better option and my personal choice on my rifle is the Williams Foolproof receiver mounted apeture sight.
The one I have on mine has held up well and there was no need to replace front sight to obtain a correct sight index.
If I could find an old bolt mounted peep I would like to try one of these on the gun but no luck yet.

Another option is to remove the tang safety and install a tang sight designed for the original model 1886. It does require drilling and tapping one hole in the tang, but the sight completely covers the tang safety cutout. The attached picture shows my 1886 Japchester with a Lyman tang sight installed.

My reason for asking is that I am purchasing a used "Japchester" 1886 ELW that has a Marbles tang sight already installed. I am curious if it was necessary to have any additional holes drilled and tapped to mount the sight. I realize the rear mounting screw is the tang screw but am wondering if the front mounting screw hole was already there from the factory.

My Dad's 1886 ELW came factory drilled and tapped for a reciever sight, I think there's a williams on it now. Far enough away from the eye as to not hurt you with heavy loads, but close enough for a great sight picture.

The Japchester 1886's, as it seems to be popular calling them, are of better metals and better workmanship than any 'real' 1886 I've ever seen. Same goes for the Miroku made 1895's.

Really like ,my Marbles Tang Site on my Marlin 1895 Cowboy, and no it dosen't.
