I'm trying to identify which model of the 1892 this is. All of the pictures I've seen show the magazine tube extending to the end of the barrel. Please see attached picture.

Thanks

Its hard to see the end of the magazine tube. From the factory, the shorter magazine tubes usually had a domed cap on the end, the full length magazines usually had a flat ended cap. Your barrel is also much shorter than normal. Shorter barrels also usually had a shorter fore end by about one inch. I dont recall the exact measurement, but yours looks like a standard long one. Your barrel and magazine may or may not have been cut down at some point in its life. With better pictures of the end of the barrel and the magazine cap, it may be possible to learn something about it. If it seems original condition, it would be a special order gun, and a factory letter may be worthwhile.

Complete serial number is 401136, Winchester data indicted it was manufactured in 1907.

From the picture of the magazine tube cap and your measurement of the barrel length, it was most likely a longer gun that has been cut down in barrel length and magazine tube length. Standard length of the rifles was 24" (yours is a rifle, based on the type of fore end and butt stock and magazine attachment hardware), with a full length magazine tube. It wasn't uncommon to have them cut down to shorter lengths and/or the mag tubes shortened as well. Octagon barrels were also turned from full octagon to 1/2 round to lighten the gun or make them a little different looking. Round barrels were supposed to be standard, but the octagons were actually more commonly ordered and seen. If yours had makings on the barrel, it was originally round.

As a shooter grade gun, it should be fun. Its main collectability has been changed (lowered) because of the modifications, but its still a nice old gun with character. Do you own it, or thinking of buying it, or just trying to determine value?

I agree with Malamute that it was probably cut down. Looks like the barrel was shortened too. It has the "rifle" style (as opposed to carbine) buttstock/plate, for end and forend cap. Probably originally a 24" full magazine "rifle" configuration.

It is a .38 ACT or .38-40 as it was known later. We have it on consignment in our gun store. As its value is lowered already, I've given some thought to clean it up and restore the wood.
