Winchester 9mm Black Talon

I was amused how much a brand name affected the perception that one was menacing, sinister and inhumane while the other recieved no attention at all by the media.

I agree, the name of a product means a lot, especially to people who don't know a lot about ammo. To everyday people (not THR'ers), XTP and SXT are just some innocuous letters, like on their Ford F-150 STX. Names like Gold Dot or Golden Saber might indicate that those are more valuable since "gold" is in the name or just indicate that the color is gold. Critical Duty, Critical Defense, TAP, etc. sound tactical and indicate that they must be for law enforcement. And since no one reads anymore, almost everyone is confused as to where the water is located in the Hydra-Shok ammo.

It is that vein of ignorance that cried out against the Black Talon. Many people saw "Black" as a sign of racism - at least it was billed that way in the news. Many saw the "talon" part as being about razor blade-like jacket petals. Perception is powerful and the lore continues to this day to the uninformed. We can all see that ammo manufacturers have changed their marketing to more neutral designations for their premier hollowpoint ammo that most people just think are innocuous.
