Winchester M70 Extreme Weather SS or Remington M700 Mountain SS...?

Pretty much decided on the M70 EWSS in .270 Win.

Thanks for all the input.

Now I'm lookin' at Scopes.

Leupold VX-Freedom 2-7x33
Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40

Like both Leupold and 2-7, but the Vortex looks interesting.

For a hunting rifle, Leupold. I have not been impressed with the glass in the lower end Vortex scopes.

The Leupold will offer more eye relief but for that rifle, a VX-3i would be my choice (in Leupold). Lots of good glass options.

I have Leupold glass (VX3 3.5-10x40) on all of my rifles but I am an old guy and have not experienced all of the other good glass choices on the market today - Leupold performance has been flawless for many years.

Good choice on the EW, I personally don't think even a well done 700 holds a candle to the modern M70s in stock hunting rifle form. I had a Baco M70 Ultimate Shadow in .270 that was one of the best shooting hunting rifles I ever laid hands on. The three EWs I had couldn't keep up with it, but I'd still buy another one if a deal came up.

The Leupold will offer more eye relief but for that rifle, a VX-3i would be my choice (in Leupold). Lots of good glass options.

My nicest and most expensive scope is a Vortex, but i'd have to agree, I couldn't ever get a warm fuzzy with any of the cheaper Diamondbacks I've looked through. Lots of other options I like better in relatively inexpensive scopes. A VX-3i would sit nicely on an EW.

This Remington M700 American Wilderness Rifle looked interesting.

...until I read THIS review.

As for glass - Usually go w/ low-end Leupold.

The ole M700 has a Vari-X II 3-9x40 ('81), and the 77/357 has a VX-I 2-7x33.

The boys' Mossberg Patriots came w/ Vortex Crossfire II 3-9x40's, and they are very nice and below the Diamondback.

Read that Leupold is using VX-II glass in the Freedom scopes, which is good.

Also prefer the 2-7 for hunting, which Vortex does not have in the Diamondback (TTBoMK)

Winchester - mounts Crossfire II's and Diamondback's on their ad pics.

I only buy leupold scopes. They’re amazing. Even the low end stuff Ive hammered and soaked repeatedly and it just never lets me down.

I have that exact scope and it is superb! Its on the pictured fn mauser. The scope pictured on the model 70 is a cheap 2x7 leupold rifleman. Its a testament to their durability as its ridden that model 70 .375 through many hunts without fail. Rain, mud, and snow.

That's a tight mount on the VX3i.

Wonder if low rings will work?

(Anybody know who makes the base/ring combo in the M70 pics? Talley?)

If I weren’t stuffing my craw with Tennessee BBQ right now I’d snap a picture of my Leupold ring collection. As I am away from home I’ll offer instead this hint: none of my rifles use Leupold rings. My son has 1 set on his 10/22 despite my disapproval.

Standard: don’t like the design, PITA with limited choices.
Rifleman: oxymoron, shame on Leupold for choosing that name.
QD: 60/40ish split that scratches scopes and strips screws, ask me how I know.

Talley integrated mounts would look and function great. I consider myself a Leupold scope fan but I do not care for their mounts and rings below the Mark line-up.

This Leupold VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm looks interesting.

Not bad on the price, and a 2.5 will still work in the woods.

Better lookin' scope than the Freedom, that's for sure.

That's what I run on my 6.5 Kimber, except I had Leupold add a B&C reticle. I've been very happy with it as an all around big game scope, and haven't felt limited by the mag range for the kind of hunting I do. On 8x I don't have any issues practicing on steel out to 400 yds.

300 yd zero check target from this past season, the bottom two are two different loads with the Kimber/Leupold

I use Talley LW lows on the Kimber, and, I believe I used either Talley's or DNZ Game Reapers when I used the same scope on my M70 EWs.

Usually line both the ring bottoms and caps 150 deg. w/ 3M vinyl electrical tape, snug the caps and wait a few days for the vinyl to extrude, and then torque.

Works for the bases as well.

Good (and tasty) shooting.

The Tally LW lows look very solid. Will probably wait for the rifle and scope, and then make some 0.300" and 0.400" fitting blocks just to make sure.

Leupold has a fitting program.

Have a fine duplex on my Vari-X II 3-9x40, and a wide-view duplex on my VX-I 2-7x33.

Will look into getting a wide-view for this one as well.

Well...

Dropped the hammer on a Winchester Extreme Weather SS/.270 Win./Leupold VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm.

Will need to fit it for Talley LW mounts and flip-up covers.

Thanks for all the input.

A Remington, poorly made, would have been tragic. No worries in that regard w/ the FN Winchester.

And while the .260 CM is a fine cartridge in its own right - it would have been, for me, a regrettable mistake.

Might get an LR rifle chambered in it down the road, but for a work-horse round, the .270 Win./280 Rem. fits the bill, and FN Winchester made the choice for me.

Found the VX-3i for less than a $100 more than the VX-Freedom (VX-2) 2-7x33mm. A good fit for the rifle.

Should be a shooter.

That should be a very solid hunting rig.
