I just acquired a Winchester Model 42. It's in good shape, except that I noticed a small hairline crack in the stock where it meets the receiver. It is barely detectable, but I don't want it to get any bigger. Any suggestions on how to repair that?

Thank you.

You are going to have to show pictures. There are different approaches depending on where the crack is on the stock, and where the receiver or trigger mechanism is in relationship to the crack. For some cracks, I managed to use a very slow curing epoxy and let the stuff ooze into the crack. For another rifle, below the crack, I routed out one hell of a lot of wood, a miner could have taken an ore cart down there, and replaced the wood with Devcon stainless or aluminum filled epoxy.

Yep, pics are necessary. Where on the stock? Why did it happen - was the stock swollen or loose? Both of those can lead to cracking

Also important is whether the wood is oil-soaked. If a very tight crack, it could be fixed by some very thin "crazy glue", which would flow into the crack before hardening. Luckily (maybe) a shotgun is somewhat less critical about stock strength than many rifles. What gauge is it? If a .410 bore, then strength is not an issue. Then again, perhaps a replacement butt is available.

I emailed my classmate who had a similar problem. Her stock had a chunk come out near where the wood meets the metal. Trouble is is that the wood was soaked heavily in oil and I'm unsure if she was able to glue it back together.
