A friend of mine who is wanting to get into shooting only owns one rifle which is the Winchester Model 88 in .284. He is wanting to sell it and use the money to buy something he will shoot more often but that is not the point of my thread.

Usually when somebody asks me the value of a gun I ca ntell them off the top of my head or just check gunbroker etc. and give them a ballpark. However, I am having trouble coming up with a price.

His is in good to excellent condition but I am waiting on him to email me the serial so I can tell what year it was manfactured. Apparently the Pre-64 models are worth quite a bit judging from gunbroker and guns America.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I am trying to get him off to a good start in the world of shooting.

As Aunt Bee noted, the .284 caliber fetches a considerably higher resale value than the more common (.243 and .308) calibers. The 88 chambered in .358 Winchester has the most collectors appeal. The .284 caliber was introduced in 1963 and the Model 88 so chambered had the diamond cut checkering and, in excellent condition, is valued @ $1,200.00 (23rd edition of the "Blue Book"); twice the value of the .308 caliber in otherwise identical rifles. Interestingly, the pre-64 version of the Model 88 chambered in .284 Winchester is valued @ $425.00 more than the post-63 version (that had the impressed basket-weave "checkering" and is valued @ $775.00). All estimated value figures presume that the rifles are in excellent condition.

I was there when a friend shot a large buck at 400 yards running with a Win model 88 in .284. We were with several guys forming a deer drive when the big buck busted out of a patch of red willow and zipped accross a 1/4 away.
I had it in the scope of my 06 but thought it was too far and too fast to hit.
I didn't think he hit it until 3 members of our party found it in some brush shot through the neck. He said it says "danger range 5 miles" on the box, so he figured 1/4 should be easy. I had no arguement for ol Jody.

Great Story d2wing! :)

Quick update. I got the serial and the rifle was made in 1964. What do you guys think my buddy should be asking as a fair price?
