Wipe-Out Causing Rust?

Has anybody encountered this? I left Wipe-Out foam bore cleaner in a bore (70's vintage Marlin 1894) for about 2 hours and this is what I got. The can goes on and on about how leaving it in the bore 24 hours or longer won't hurt anything and says, "Wipe-Out cannot cause rust." I've left Wipe-Out over night in plenty of rifles over the years without any problems.

That's amazing. I wonder if for some reason there was rust already in there, prior to your cleaning. I've never used it, so I'm just speculating. NOT SAYING YOU DON'T TAKE CARE OF YOUR FIREARM!

I have not encountered that. Hope I don't, if that is rust.

I suspect that is what the WipeOut loosened from what that was already there ... I've left it in a pretty clean barrel for 12 hours or so with no ill effects.

I'd give 20-to-1 odds that you're seeing what was in the barrel. The color of the stuff on the patch might not match the color of the inside of the bore BWO (before Wipe-Out), but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

So maybe the rust was just covered over by other layers of crud? The first time I tried WO, the results looked normal -- blue colored stain on patches, indicating copper. There was still a lot of crud in the grooves, so I used a wire brush, which removed a lot of soot. Then WO again, which resulted in rust on patch. I feel like an archeologist -- each time you remove a layer of debris, you make a new discovery.

They claim that powder residue comes out brown....I have cleaned several of my guns with it which I know are not rusted..the frist shot of Wipe-Out comes out brown...after that no brown.

It did disolve some of the finish on the stock of one of my guns though...so I have started plugging up the chamber with patches now.

My dad cleaned out the WWII vintage barrel of his mauser with it and it took about 5 treatments to get it spotless...but all kinds of colors came out. Blue, brown, black, yellow...and all kinds of smells too.

Maybe--it wouldn't be the first time in history--but I think it's more likely that it's not rust at all.

I agree, there are often strange things happen with what we use to clean or protect bores with.

Is the monsoon season here in AZ and we cool with swamp cooler, resulting in very high humidity. So as for each season I drag guns out of the safe to check and relube, was shocked to find black hard spikey looking crap down first couple rifle muzzles. I had to clean junk out with Chore Boy brass strips wrapped around wire brush to remove.

I then remembered couple months ago I had slugged some muzzles to check for wear &c. I then just squirted patches with PB Blaster and wiped for bore protection which had always worked good. There must have been some sort of chemical reaction between smeared lead in muzzle and the PB Blaster to produce the weird junk.

Rust (oxidation) is caused by air, salt, or water contact to unprotected metal.

You got out what was already there, be it crud or rust. More likely just crud. I'd bet money on that, and I don't bet unless it's a sure thing.

Looks like WIpe-Out did what it is supposed to do and removed all the old carbon fouling.

Bingo! I've had this exact result when cleaning old hardened carbon out of a barrel wipe out. It isn't rust it's just heavy, old, carbon fouling.

put the patch in a cup of water with a magnetic under it for a few days and report back
