hi guys,although I have been loading 357 and 44 mag and also 308 a few years I still consider myself a novice with experience but still lots to learn.but today after having washed a few 44 cases and left to dry for a few hours I thought I would resize them and clean the primer pockets to give myself a start for when I decide to load,When is was picking the cases from the tray I notice what looked like wirewool inside a case,I couldnt explain where it came from so thought no more about it,until I picked up the next,which when tapped on my loading bench also had this wirewool,I dont use anything which resembles this so it baffled me,and so I thought of you guys,when I gather it up it even feels stiff,Any ideas?

Where did you get the cases? Does the stuff stick to a magnet?

The only thing I can think of is maybe someone annealed the cases in an oven. One trick to avoid getting hot spots from direct IR or convection currents is to pack stuff to be annealed in steel wool. OTOH, I'm sure someone out there has enough time on their hands to clean cases with steel wool.

These cases were bought new by me,have never been annealed or used by anyone else.I dont think the wool is steel, it seems more pliable,like maybe small strings of lead something like a spider web. I thought maybe the powder (Unique) may be causing the lead bullets to oxidise or re-act in a peculiar way.tho I dont see why it should.

How did you wash and dry these new cases? Is it something residual/left over from the washing and drying?

No idea what it is, or where it came from.

But Unique powder somehow "reacting" with lead bullets didn't have anything to do with it.
