ok, i am from michigan, i have a ccw, but your state does not honor any permits. is it still legal to transport a handgun while traveling in your state in a locked box unloaded?

I live in IL and transport guns to my cabin in WI in a case in the trunk, unloaded. No problems with that.

I live in Wisconsin during the summer. I bring mine unloaded and cased in the trunk.

It needs to be unloaded and in a case.

Now, the case doesn't need to be locked, or a specialty hard case, or anything like that, but it must be something made for the purpose of containing a firearm. So a gun sock counts, but shoving it in your jeans leg does not. However, if you cut the leg off your jeans, sewed one end shut, and added a drawstring/zipper/whatever to the other end, then it would be ok.

A little research on the WI websites will help here. Transportation is not as strict as in IL (for the IL guys who posted that they transport in the trunk...not required in WI). That doesn't make putting it in a trunk a bad idea mind you. It must be cased. There is case law in WI that a pistol on your front seat in plain view is concealed and you can go to jail for that. Make sure you have a case.

CCW is not allowed for the little people. Open carry, however is a different story. While technically not a crime, open carry was nevertheless discouraged by law enforcement types until very recently in the form of "disorderly conduct" charges (or some other catch-all crime).

After some brave soul sued and won a test case, the state AG issued a non-binding opinion stating that open carry, by itself, was not subject to DO charges, and that little people can do things like go to the grocery store while OCing. So things are a bit up in the air now. I'd guess little municipalities will follow the opinion, while places like Milwaukee have vowed to put you face down on the pavement for it.

If you're bringing a handgun for hunting, my understanding is that it's a longstanding (and well-understood by LEOs) exception that hunters may open carry while hunting. I don't hunt, but that's what my hunting friends tell me.
