Does anyone know what powder Wolf uses in it's handgun/rifle ammo? They say they use Vihtavuori in their .22 stuff, but I was told that was made in Germany for Wolf. Obviously open to correction though as I've been unable to verify.

TIA!

If their .22 ammo stinks as bad and burns as dirty as the rest of their stuff I'd say it was the same powder :D

as noted the Wolf .22LR fodder is german made and rather good.
The cheap, dirty burning, stench producing, centerfire ammo, that is noted for not functioning properly or gumming up many firearms, is russian (as in old soviet ammo plants) in origin. so i very much doubt they share a powder source.

and no i don't know what they ARE using in the centerfire fodder but i don't think it's Vihtavuori.

While I've never had a problem with Wolf in either my SKSs or Bushy (and I'm not trying to start a Wolf=bad/good thread as that's been done), I do agree that they're more than likely not using Vihtavuori in it. My presumption, like you mentioned, is they aquired the use of a place in country that made powder for their military stuff. My Dad mentioned being curious about it when we chatted today and I thought I'd try and find out.

Heh,it's funny you say that. We can tell what lanes have had wolf firedon them by the funky greenish residue everywhere.

I'll see if I can find that article in a magazine about the Wolf company. It was in Combat Arms or some such magazine this summer (a magazine about military weapons). Sounded like it was a small family owned company that did a good job at making ammo cheap.
I've never had any problems from Wolf in my AR but I just use the poly stuff, not the old lacquer coated ammo. It does stink though. I usually love the smell of gunpowder but that stuff opens your sinuses.

If you want to know where Wolf ammo is made read the box. Wolf does not make any of its own ammo, they contract out to forgein companies, in Russia and Eastern europe. Wolf .22 LR ammo is made under contract By SK in Germany. And it is top notch ammo at a good price. I believe SK is owned by Lapua.

which i beleive explains the use of Vihtavuori powder, which IIRC is also owned by Lapua.

Didn't notice before but you're correct. Never noticed it before but one of the boxes of Wolf I have (.223, older production) has TCW on one edge. But I can't find anything in any of my headstamp guides on TCW so I'm going to keep looking. Need to check the Wolf 7.62x39 boxes I have also. Good call. Thanks!

Found out TCW = Tula Cartridge Works which became Wolf.

Just checked and I have some milsurp and Wolf 7.62x39. Nothing on the Wolf packaging and "Wolf" on the steel case headstamp. The other has nothing (no writing at all) on the package and on the headstamp (brass case) there's a 13 at 12 o'clock and 88 at 6 o'clock. The headstamp guides I have say that's Cuban made in 1988.

It was a joke Einstein, and I was referring to the smell. Oh yeah, and Welcome to THR. You'll find that you get along with people better if you're not a jerk.

You prompted me to grab one of my boxes of .223 Wolf 62gr fmj. It's the newer steel case/poly coated stuff. Front of the box says Made in Russia. The only other clue is on one of the side flaps it says rNc (and the N is backwards :D ) in a diamond logo.
