Verdigris - Authorities in Rogers County are investigating a home invasion that left a woman injured Friday afternoon in Verdigris.

It happened at a home in the area of 7700 East 540 Road in Verdigris, that's very near Highway 66 and about 15 miles northeast of Tulsa.

Apparently, a man tried to break into a woman's home through a window. The woman was at home and retrieved a handgun, firing a shot, but missing the suspect.

"There was a lady at home, the owner of the house. Looks like she may have retreated to obtain a gun and may have shot, I don't believe at this point she hit the suspect but we're not sure," says Rogers County Undersheriff Barry Lamb. "Believe the suspect got the weapon away from her and fired one shot back and she was struck. She was lifeflighted from here to the hospital, but was still talking when she left."

The homeowner, identified as Teri Jones, was struck in the shoulder. She was airlifted to Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, but is expected to be okay. Terry's husband Dale says she is in stable condition. Meanwhile, close family friends are shocked.

"Something like this would never happen to anyone we know in this area," says Donica Bendabout. "A total shock."

Now, deputies are looking for the suspect, described as a heavy-set bald man, wearing a red shirt. He was last seen driving a brown Nissan pickup truck with a gray primer front door.

If you know anything about the crime, you're asked to call police.

As I tell everyone who has a gun, practice with it. Dont just shoot at static paper but actually train. Find a range that will let you shoot multiple targets, shoot on the move, and shoot from a holstered draw.
You can practice at home with an unloaded weapon.
When BGs are neutralized, it is not dumb luck in most cases, it is training.

Remember folks ... an unarmed intruder who breaks into your home is not an immediate threat to your life...

Unless, of course - he takes your gun away from you :(

And that's all I have to say about that ;)

Mindset...Mindset...Mindset. Having a gun doesn't make you armed any more than holding a guitar makes you a guitarist. Without the skill and the will, it's a liability.
