Working at Cabelas?

    Thinking of trying for a Job at the New Cabelas that is Opening in Boise, anyone here work there or know someone who works there?:confused:

    I'd like to find out what it's like working for the company in advance if possable.

    To keep this Gun Related, I'm considering trying for a position either at the Gun Dept or Ammo Dept.:D

    Had a buddy that worked the Dundee, MI store. College kid, though, so not really in it for career advancement.

    He liked it, got him some good discounts on guns and ammo. Plus, he got to work in (to me anyways) a playground.

    I'd imagine that it is like any other chain store: you'll find some that love it, some that hate it. Probably depends a great deal on your management, and how you act.

    Read the fine print of some details, they want you working three out four weekends.

    I worked at Cabela's in Kearney for 2 years in the gun department. the discounts are not that good. as mentioned you will only get 1 weekend a month off. I have heard now that you won't get two days off in a row either during the week. gun discounts are no more than 10%. I don't remember how much ammo discounts were because I reload most of my stuff but I don't think it was much more if any more then 10 %. unless you buy Cabela's brand optics discounts there are only 10 % or less on optics unless you buy something in the bargain corner. you probably won't get 40 hours a week and don't even be late without a very good excuse. you will then find the .05% of the customers that will make your life miserable. you will also learn and have to like the fact that a customers will point a gun at you(most of the time accidentally). that will cause you to triple check a gun before you hand a gun to a customer and when you get it back. I thought working in a gun department would be fun but overall working in retail is not worth the hassle.

    If you really think you want to work in one, you probably oughta come down here and check the Lehi store out.
    Just like any other mega-retailer, I'd only work in one if I was desperate.

    I worked retial for about 2.5 years while in college. It's horrible no matter where you work.

    i have a good friend that works at the mitchell store. he started at the entry level position, and quickly worked his way up. cabela's sends him on hunting and fishing trips, now.

    his house is loaded w/ items from cabela's because of the discounts and payment plan. he gets a pretty good discount on used guns. he gets to take whatever he wants from the store to use for hunting trips... he gets invitations from customers all the time to go hunting (out of state, out of country) for any species...

    but, he's always working. we can't hunt together because he has to work. we can't do extended trips because he has to work. he doesn't like to talk about hunting because he gets an earfull all day at work. he gets lots of wild stories about impossible shots and big critters...

    Discussion reminds me of a story I heard:

    A young guy from Texas moves to California and goes to a big department store looking for a job. The manager says, "Do you have any sales experience?" The kid says,"Yeah, I was a salesman back home in Texas." Well, the boss liked the kid so he gave him the job. "You start tomorrow. I'll come down after we close and see how you did."

    His first day on the job was rough but he got through it. After the store was locked up, the boss came down. "How many sales did you make today?" The kid says, "One." The boss says, "Just one? Our sales people average 20 or 30 sales a day. How much was the sale for?" Kid says "$101,237.64" Boss says "101,237.64? What on earth did you sell?"

    Kid says, "First I sold him a small fish hook. Then I sold him a medium fish hook. Then I sold him a larger fish hook. Then I sold him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down at the coast so I told him he was gonna need a boat, so we went down to the boat department, I sold him that twin engine Chris Craft. Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the automotive department and sold him that 4X4 Blazer."

    The boss said, "A guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a boat and truck?" Kid says, "No, he came in here to buy a bottle of Midol for his wife and I said, "Well, your weekend's shot, you might as well go fishing."

    Did the FT retail thing in college at Toys R Us.

    Being as nice as I possibly can, retail sucks.

    Customers treat you like an idiot cause you're a retail worker. They will give you a schedule, change it four times during the week, and then when it gets towards the end of the week after you've given up one of your days off to come in for some idiot that was "sick," they send you home after working 2 hours on the last day you're scheduled for that week so you don't go into the dreaded overtime.

    I won't let 75% of my friends get near any of my guns, there is no way I would stand behind the counter of a mega store and hand guns to retards I wouldn't trust with a nerf gun.

    Hmmmm.
    40 hours or less a week.
    One weekend a month off.
    Welfare pays better than the employer.
    Sounds like a job in most any gun shop in America.
    Customers unintentionally using the employees as sight in targets.
