Would you be offended?

Heh. The folks around here don't really care, neither do the folks in Arizona at the Wal-Mart.

Myself, my friend Kim, her fiance, and my soon-to-be-girlfriend Sarah decided we were going to go out to the Arizona desert to shoot. Halfway out of town, we realized that we didn't have enough ammo for more than about 15-20 minutes of shooting.

We head to the nearby Wal-Mart and go to the sporting goods counter. We told the guy, "We need some 9mm Luger, .38 Special, and .40 S&W". He inquired "How much do you need?", to which the response was "All you've got." We also threw in a hundred rounds of Federal 12ga birdshot. We walked out of there with about a thousand rounds of ammo, and nobody so much as batted an eye. The fact that all of us, with the exception of Sarah (who'd never shot before) were packing (Kim and I openly, me with a G19, her with a Walther P99. Her fiance had his police-issue Sig, but was carrying concealed) didn't seem to phase them at all either. I don't even think anyone noticed the guns.

At the local (it's about 40mi away) Wal-Mart here, there's the "regular" Sporting Goods Counter guy, and some other random folks. The other folks can't find jack, and since Wal-Mart puts the ammo on the other side of the counter, it's impossible for you to point out where it is while the guy's looking for it. Very frustrating. When the regular guy's there, he'll find anything you want right away, sell you whole cases of ammo, and make some small talk...but no comments about the quantity of ammo being purchased.

I'd just let it slide, or come up with a witty response. "See the price of copper going up? Ammo's made with copper. Think of it as investing in copper futures." or something equally random. :D

A couple of years ago opening day of deer hunting... Up at 3am, on the road by 4am, blew the water pump on the jeep on the way up, missed my deer, tore my new hunting pants. Didn't get home until about 9pm. Couldn't drive (obviously) and the only place open was Walmart. Had the boyfriend take me. Well, I was tired and extremely and p-o'ed. Three people let me in line in front of them... The clerk, guy about 16-ish, was just about to give the standard greeting "How are you? Find everything you need?" when he looked down and saw what I had - A Patch for my pants, 3 boxes of slugs, and a box of tampons. He was silent for the transaction and gave a very meek - "have a nice night"...

"Because an armed society is a polite society and, believe it or not, some people are even less polite than you." :)

Or maybe:

:) "Because an armed society is a polite society and, believe it or not, some people are not very polite, so I'm just doing my part to make up for them." :)

where does this lady get off interrogating me about my purchases?

That isn't an interrogation. It's just somebody who asked a question that poped into their head. Ask her if she wants to go target shooting next time. Maybe you will covert an anti.

A few years back, I was finishing up a transaction at a jewelry store with my fiancee when I joking said that I had to put off buying another handgun since we had just bought this diamond ring at the spur of the moment. The store rep looked at me and said "you do not want to know my opinion about guns." She went from pleasantly finishing a 30 minute transaction to shaking her head in disbelief.

I just told her that as a matter of fact "I don't care what she thinks about them."

Good lord. A little old lady in Wal-Mart trying to make conversation and you guys are acting like you've been subjected to the Spanish Inquisition or something.

Look, as gun owners and pro-RKBA people, one of our goals is that guns and ammo should be seen as a normal and common thing in our society. Nothing to get excited about. Nothing out of the ordinary. Instead, most of the 'suggested responses' in this thread make the buyer sound like they're purchasing something they're insecure about. Something they don't want to be asked about. You're just buying ammo here - not Preperation H or something, you know? Lighten up.

Think about how you would have reacted if you'd gone to check out with an MP3 player or something, and the woman said "What's with all these young people buying MP3 players these days?" That's exactly how you should have reacted to this.

I don't mind the conversation in line, but one time I was "held up" by a guy that was running the register, he was around 30 yrs. old. He had to make a comment about everything he ran thru the register to the lady in line in front of me. I got up there with a bag of apples, and in a bad mood because you know the drill. Wal-Mart has 39 registers in our local store, and only 6 or 7 are used, and there are about 10-15 people in each line. So I toss my bag of apples up on the register and doofis looks at me and says "So, what's the apples for?" In a short, unlpeasant tone I replied "To eat" with the look of It's not your job to ask about everything customers buy, just get me out the damned door! He got real quiet.

Ammo Sale

ATF restricts the sale of ammo that can be used by both a handgun and a long gun to those over 21. Ammo that cannot be used in a handgun can be purchased by a person 18yrs or older. Both sales are prompted at the register by questions about the ammo when it can be used by both a handgun and a long gun. Wal*Mart has strict policies regarding the sale of many items including ammo. If you look young, you will be asked for an ID. Now that being said, sounds like to Wal*Mart assoc made comments that were out of line or she made for conversation, not taking into consideration of what the customer's point of view was.

I work at WM in the Sporting Goods dept. Just adding my .02.........:)

Just piling on I guess, but in order to be offended I need to actually have some respect, even a tiny little bit, for what the other person has to say. Haven't yet met a ChinaMart cashier that rises to that level.

No? Really? Well, from what I've gathered there are quite a few posters on this forum who work at Wal-Mart, or have in the past. What on earth are you doing on here participating in a conversation with people who are obviously so far below your social level?

I don't know what "level" you consider yourself to be at (or why you think you belong there) but I'm well educated, well travelled, and well read. I currently have over 100 employees and make a pretty comfortable 6 figure salary and yet I still respect what a cashier or anyone else has to say until they give me a reason not to.

Hope you don't come into my Wal-Mart in WI, kfranz.:scrutiny: Us idiots wouldn't even begin to know how to serve such an intellectual giant as yourself.

I just bought some .45 ACP there, had my nephew get it out of the case, (He's the Sporting Goods Merch. Mgr.) and actually had a snappy line ready for the cashier, whom I sort of know. She didn't ask, nor ask if I was 21. Oh well, one of them will ask sooner or later.;)

I guess I'm offending thin skinned folks. I said, and I'll quote myself for clarity,

Haven't yet met a ChinaMart cashier that rises to that level.

Now, I'm gonna do the same thing, but am also going to bold and increase in size one word that I consider to be an integral part of that statement.

Haven't yet met a ChinaMart cashier that rises to that level.

Nothing was implied by that statement. Several folks seemed to take offense when nothing offensive has been said. Look at yourselves, perhaps, to see if you're the one that considers yourself an intellectual giant. Especially if you equate income with intelligence. I'm just an average guy with an average intellect, who also happens to have average reading comprehension skills, who additionally tries not to read too much into the posts of others.

I'll add to my buddy list those of you that were offended by my statement, so that when I do meet a ChinaMart cashier who's opinion I respect, you'll be the first to know. I will say though, that since the new SuperChinaMart opened near me, I use the DIYS checkouts almost exclusively.

Not sure where you're at entropy, but I'll do my best to stay out of your wal-mart. I try to stay out of them as much as possible, regardless of location, but nobody else seems to carry those No Boundries $1.22 cent pencil pouches you guys have, and the rotisserie/broasted chicken prices are much better than Copps...

Well Im a ex-smartass and Im NEVER scared to say anything to anyone. I havent always been like that but for me the older I have gotten the less embaressed(sp) I get. If I felt the situation needed it I would have come up with something very cleaver and mean spirited!. I wasnt there so I dont know here tone or facial expression but she could of well been trying to make sure something wasnt going on she needed to know about!

Nope, it would take more than that to offend me. I wasn't there, but it just seemed like harmless, small talk.

We walked out of there with about a thousand rounds of ammo, and nobody so much as batted an eye.

This is how it should be. Any questions about what you are buying or why you are buying it isn't "friendly chat" it's unprofessional and maybe Walmart should train them better.

If you are buying condoms or KY jelly, is it ok for the clerk to smirk and ask "So what do you need these for?" Is that being friendly? Another member pointed out these can have non-sexual uses.

What if you buy a DVD and the clerk feels it is violent? Should they be able to make judgements or comments about "young people buying all these violent movies today?"

What if I buy Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" and the Wally world clerk sneers "whoa, looks like we got ourselves a Christian nut here. Do you actually beleve in this stuff?" Is that ok? I mean, he's just asking you a question right... if this bothers you then you are obviously confusing a pleasant Wally world experience with the "spanish inquisition."

Do you see the slippery slope of clerks asking questions or making comments about what you are buying? If they want to make conversation, great, wonderful- talk about the weather, just don't ask me about me about why I am buying bullets.

I would of told her that my neighor was asking me to many questions about my ammo consumption and i needed to take care of him..No really I dont think i would of even thought much of it .Im a type of person who stays away from conflict of any kind. One of my downfalls in life.I just would rather not make anyone mad even if what they did was stupid..There is a point were you must stick up for things but this wouldnt be for me.

I agree with Chet, and that was hilarious. kfranz is the offensive one here. I hope I am not in line behind him waiting for hours while he pontificates about how much higher a pedestal he is on than everyone else, Oh wait, that will never happen because I shop at walmart, not Macy's.

As a fella with four older sisters, a wife and no sons, I can identify with that poor guy. I laughed for about 5 minutes after reading this!

I wouldn't have been offended. Maybe she really was just trying to make conversation.

As a sidenote, both of the women who work the sporting goods counter at the local Walmart know me. As soon as I come to the counter they generally ask me "What do you need today? 9mm or .223? Value packs? How many? Only one of each today? That isn't really like you."
:D
The economy in central PA sucks and it gets too cold here but the people are great!
