Would you take the shot?

I'd say in my toughest cowboy voice "This classroom ain't big enough for the two of us."

Then we'd square off and squint at each other for a few minutes before drawing and firing one shot each from the hip. He'd fall over dead and I'd ride off into the sunset.

I was thinking about a real life situation, one that unfortunately has occurred and what would/should I do.
I have a handgun permit and carry all the time. If I found my self in a situation where a lone gun man was shooting such as Virgina Tech or the Colorado Church shooting, and I am behind the shooter would you shoot him in the back? I guess you should stop the threat but is it just the "Old West" speaking about not shooting some one in the back that makes me uneasy. I am not talking about someone who is running away, but the only shot you have is from behind the shooter. Would you take it? How would law enforcement view it?

If you didn't, I'd say hang up your guns pardner.

"All that needs to happen for evil to succeed is for good people to do nothing"
I may have quoted that incorrectly, but you get the point. Doing nothing in a situation like that, assuming a reasonable shot opportunity is not taking the high road.

Yankee, " sounds like you would phone your Mum and ask her opinion! Just before running away."
This is what I meant by personal attacks, you could have left it at you do, you stated you do. This is unessecary and an attempt at belittling me.... good work:scrutiny:
"Nothing to live for? Lovely Wife, 4 Grand Children, just took the old blood pressure. 119/79 with a pulse of 66, not to bad."
I am SORRY :D, I stand corrected. Just goes to show you how big you can mess up when making assumptions.
"I said there is no need to have one"
There is need to have one, the defense of myself! I do not expect some other citizen with a firearm to come to my rescue, that is my reponsibility not theirs.
"So with your line of thinking You would be ok with some who had a gun, watch a thug beat your father to death"
My father is a big enough guy he can handle himself. He isn't dumb and knows how not to get into a situation like that in the first place. And yeah I would be ok because if that person were like me, they wouldnt tell the cops anything more than what they saw... not oh yeah I'm armed too but I didnt feel it was my place to intervene.
"rape your mother and take no action but (to be a good witness) and cover there own backside"
That I would have a small discrepancy with, but again why would the person advertize they are armed to police? I went over this whole situation with my girlfriend (who faced an attempted rape in her own home a few years back by a so called accuaintence sp?) and given the situations the only time she would shoot would be if HER life was in danger, or if she was someone getting raped and the rapist would not stop. I too find myself in this category, however I dont think I could legally engage a rapist while he/she is unarmed. I would make the threat that if they do not stop and stay put they will be in a world of ****.
"If you have no intrest in helping your fellow man and are only intrested in ME and MINE you are the one that needs to grow up"
Again, because we have differing opinions means I have to grow up?:barf: What is this? This is certainly not a country where we all have to think alike, if that were so what fun would America be? Seriously if you think that maybe it is you who should open your eyes a little.
"If I lost everything I had and saved one life, even yours or one of your loved ones it would be worth it."
Again, I disagree. But good for you man, in your opinion someone has to take care of the unarmed "innocents" so why not let that be you and like minded individuals... good for you!
And again, Sorry for the age assumtion thing. My mistake.

(Yankee, " sounds like you would phone your Mum and ask her opinion! Just before running away."

Well I guess we all know were each of us stands on this issue, the line has been drawn and there are clearly two sides.
If your sence of self preservation is that much stronger then wanting to help someone in need so be it. I cant hate someone for there opinion, even if it does go against what is decent and right to me. My intention was never to belittle you, just my way of making a strong case for my belief.
Good luck with the rest of your life, and I hope none of us are ever faced with this issue.

Well, tempt me a little...

Change the scenario. Instead of the victims being adults--who theoretically have made the choice about whether they'd prefered to be armed or depend on others for their defense--let's make them toddlers, who have to depend on others. And all the toddlers are holding kittens.

And say that whoever had responsibility for these toddlers--oh, a daycare center owner, let's say--had the foresight and responsibility to hire an armed guard for a lovely field trip to the local park, but he/she was the first one taken out by the shooter.

You happen to be 100 yards away, but by coinsidence you're just back from the range sighting in your trusty .308 at 100 yards, with 0.5" groups.

--OR--

Same, but no rifle: when the gunman opens fire, you happen to be 3 feet behind him. With an axe you'd been using to as part of the park's grounds crew.

Yes, the what ifs keep going. As I said earlier, I'm not sure exactly what I'll do until I'M THERE (and I probably will never be there). But until that day comes, I'm going to keep in mind that avoidance is my friend, and getting home to the family is my goal.

I suspect if they ever get around to passing good Samaritan laws that cover shooting bad-guys (if you meant to shoot the bad-guy but you forget, in the heat of the moment, to check your back-stop and get a pass-through that hits a kid--no lawsuit!) the way they cover first aid, I'll reconsider.
