Would you trade a Glock 26 for a Colt Detective?

You folks saying that Colt Detectives can be had for $400-$600

Look on gunbroker. Most have a buy it now under 600. I see people on here making some big claims about gun prices but in this case its 100% provable. And it wasn't one odd auction either. There are plenty on there.

May be useless to you to you being in California though.

a Smith or
a Ruger wheel gun

But this is probably the lowest priced centerfire colt made. And made in staggering numbers. I rarely see a Ruger or Smith go for less than a det. Special. I have several Ruger and Smith. I wouldn't trade any of them for a det. Special or a positive unless there was something rare about them.

I think it's a pretty even trade either way at today's panic level. Both parties can walk away feeling good.

I’d trade it yesterday! But then I don’t like Glocks. I’ve had 4 and they just don’t do anything for me. I sold my last one a week ago.
I own Glocks and a Colt DS. Would definitely do the trade too. To me, Glocks are like tools. Get the job done, but nothing emotional. The DS is something that brings along with it an emotional attachment, like your grandfathers old hand drill or saw.

I don’t want anyone thinking I don’t love my Glocks. I just was a Colt Detective more than I want my Glock 26, which is an excellent gun. I just see an opportunity to get something I have always wanted.

Unfortunately, this person that posted the trade opportunity hasn’t emailed me but it hasn’t been 24 hours so I am just going to assume they don’t check emails like I do. If I don’t hear back by tomorrow night or Saturday morning I will assume that I will not hear from them and move on.

Dick Specials are just so cool.
My Grandpap was a private investigator back in the old days when the steel mills were going and McKeesport Pa. was a boom town. I know he had a revolver but my uncle got it and probably sold it.
I like to think he carried a DS.
I’d like to find one with the open ejector rod and half moon front sight.
I had a nickel Special the nickel wearing through and peeling in a couple spots so I traded it. It was the newer style with shrouded ER and ramp front sight. Kind of wish I didn’t.

No danger of the that. Colt stopped making the DS in the mid-90s and hasn't reissued it.
Is it an original, second issue, third or fourth issue? SV-IV or DSII? There's a few that are actually worth more, but any one in good condition is something I'd trade any Glock for, before the Colt owner changed his/her mind.

I meant by modern made or re-issued any colt NOT a Peacemaker

A DS is worth a lot more value wise than a g26.todays conditions won't last.

A year ago used g26s were a dime a dozen at 350 bucks on armslist here. Imo, hellcats /p365s may take a bite out of their market shares. G26 is bigger and heavier @10 rounds. All you give up is mag commonality with g17/18/19, but if you carry a 12 or 13 round backup who really cares?

So if you can check it out personally and it looks good I'd do it.

I'm not talking about Peacemakers (Single Action Army) either -- those are the versions of the Detective Special over the years.

Got me curious as to how the Glock 43X and 48 are going to affect not only future sales, but the value of the G26. IMO, the 43X and the 48 are far superior to, and way more ergonomic than, the 26. Easier to shoot well, and flatter and more concealable, too.

Must be perception and personal likes. I doubt the 26s are going anywhere.

Ive had 26's for a long time and never found them to be "big". I bought a 42 when they first came out and that confirmed to me, the 26's werent going anywhere. Swore I wasnt going to buy a 43 and still ended up with two.
After playing with them awhile, I no longer have a 42 or 43, and carry my 26's in the exact same places as I would have carried the others.

I think the 26's are a very misunderstood and underrated gun. They are a lot more versatile than the single stacks, as they can use any of the larger mags. They also shoot very much like the larger guns, and dont move around as much in your hand while shooting, compared to the smaller guns. The 42 and 43's shoot very well too, but they lack that mag compatibility and capacity. That slight difference in thickness is really nothing.

I suppose a lot of it is what you know and get used to too. I know a lot of people dont like their pinkie hanging off the grip, and like to add the extensions to make up for it. All that does is make the gun bigger, which defeats the whole purpose of it being smaller. Once you learn to wrap your pinkie under the mag, it gives a very comfortable and solid grip. I shot my 42's and 43's the same way I shoot my 26's, with the pinkie wrapped under.

Those extensions can be a real bitch on your hands when you shoot too, and especially when you try and reload quickly. My hand used to get pinched a lot while shooting with them, and Ive had some pretty nasty blood blisters from them on reloads. If you have to reload, it just makes a lot more sense to use a 17 mag too.

Well, I haven’t heard from the guy with the Colt Detective looking forward a G26 or G19.

There might be one of several reasons for this:
  • This guy is a flake
  • This guy gets his kicks messing with people
  • My Armslist email messages went into his “junk” folder,
  • The guy really doesn’t want a G26, but wants a G19
  • He’s holding out to see how many offers he gets and is too flippin rude or ignorant to acknowledge my emails.
  • Armslist is a freakin’ joke.
I had set up an account a couple weeks ago to buy an S&W 17-3 with an 8 3/8”barrel for $735. Turns out it was a scam.
When I tried to contact the Colt trade guy my account was no longer valid. I had to create a new account. I sent him/her a couple of email messages Weds and Thursday and now this morning my account is no longer valid.

Really sick of people that sell guns that play games, scammers and dooshbag online operations.

Never messed with Armslist, as Ive heard a lot of people bitching about it.

Gun Broker isnt much better, and about all I use if for now is the closed auctions to help figure out what things are worth. I wont buy or sell there anymore.

I much prefer buying things in person.

Yeah, GB is another dirtbag operation that enhances my blood pressure every time I see it mentioned. I just tried Armslist for the first time 2 weeks ago and I am not impressed or amused.

I just created another account with Armslist (you’d think these morons would cross reference email addresses or something) and sent my last message to the Colt Detective guy and told him that if I didn’t hear back by 6 pm I am pulling my offer.

My wife tells me to calm down and that maybe the guy only checks emails occasionally or he may have a job where he can’t always check emails. Maybe he’s someone that travels for work...

I look at it this way, if I only had a revolver and I fell prey to the panic buying bug and G26’s were going for $900 and G19’s
were nonexistent on the site I was listing my revolver on and someone offered me a G26 with the following:
  • G26 Gen 3 with only 300 rounds fired
  • The G26 has Tru-Glo TFX sights, extended mag release and extended takedown bar.
  • 9 magazines, 3 with pinky extensions
  • A set of Glock tools
  • A G17 and a G19 X-grip Mag Adapter
  • 150 rounds of ammo
If I were serious and wanted to trade I would sure as hell acknowledge that deal.

I wouldnt trade all that for a Colt Detective. The gun and a couple of mags, maybe.

Id keep the mags and ammo, as I know Ill need them for the next 26 I get. :)

NIB 26's are going for right around $550 these days here.

I see the det. Special and the police positive as the old Glock. Plain. Mass produced utilitarian. Much like some 38 smith's. Made for 70 years and didn't even sell all that well.

Recoil gunworks has the 26 and 17 for 499 at the moment you could trade him. But I guess that's useless to you in California too. They are gen. 4. If I understand correctly those are not "approved"?
But I could be mistaken on Cali law. I'm certainly not going there to find out. Lol

I certainly use it more for that than buying. Never got hosed buying though. Maybe 10 guns. Never sold.

I truly do not care if the Colt Detectives did not sell well. No offense meant. I have always wanted one. That’s the bottom line. I rarely encounter them and when I do the seller is way too proud of what they have.

Regarding California; You are correct. We cannot get Gen 4s or 5s, unless someone brings it in then sells it, but law enforcement can buy them. Even if the gun is old, if it’s not on the current roster it cannot he bought and legally received in the state. And I definitely agree with not coming here to find out. ;)

So looking forward to leaving here.

.
I have wanted a Colt Detective since I was a kid. I do hope this is the real deal.

For your sake I hope so too. I've a few "Grail" guns I've lusted after since I was a kid too. The lust kinda wore off as I aged, but I would make that trade(if legitimate) in a heartbeat and never look back.
