WTB-Dillon RL 550 Press

Ernie: Don't want to sell my two, but I have seen a few bargins on eBay. But check carefully that the press is complete and not missing parts. I have seen a few jerks that will strip the press and sell it and the parts seperately. Also verify Dillon's price and shipping charges before you bid(if you elect to do so), you could end up paying more especially with shipping added. Good luck in your pursuit.

Thanks for advice.I noticed that the prices on Ebay-are kind of high too-especially if the caliber is not what you want.It might be cheaper just to order the press in the cal.you want.Ernie
 
If you order new, going through brainenos.com could save money. The prices are the same as dillon direct, but he pays shipping for over $400 orders.
 
I have a 550 that I have vitually quit using since I got my Hornady LNL progressive. The Hornady is not only less expensive than the 550 but is twice the machine with more inovative ideas. It is comparable to the 650.

I have the 550 set for one cartridge, while I can change over the Hornady in about 2 min to any of 15 other cartridges I load.
 
Ernie: BTW, the Dillon press does not come with dies, but most of the presses I have seen on ebay come with dies so that does jack up the price somewhat. I use Dillon dies for all my pistol reloading and I load for 8 different pistol calibers. Also load for over 12 rifle calibers and prefer Redding dies for my rifle reloading.
 
Ernie, I don't know if you have ordered your press or not but Brian Enos is the place to order from. I actually called his number and guess what? I got Brian on the phone. I was hung up for months on whether to get a 1050 or a 650. Brian convinced me that the 550 was all I needed because I don't load 50,000 cases a year. He took all the time I needed and he was'nt trying to get through the phone call and move on. He will do you right. Get the "As it should be" package. I also added the tool caddy last week. It's really nice for the money. I've reloaded for over 40 years on many single stages, the Hornady Projector, the RCBS Ammomaster and find the 550 to be the easiest to straighten out if you encounter a problem, and with all presses, you will encounter problems from time to time. I just set up a square deal b of a friends next to my 550b,and the 550 is the way to go if choosing between them.The extra hand room and visibility of the work area is FAR superior on the larger machine,FYI.

also,if your bench is high enough you do not need the stron mounts that dillon pushes at ya to buy. I do kinda like the roller handle on mine tho.

Thanks all for great advice. Wound up with Hornady LNL for my 32S&W long.Press is massive,decently priced and with the pistol insert in the powder measure-charges as low as 1.2gr are quite reliable.Customer service is excellent and overall the press is trouble free.Ernie
 
I agree with other as to working with Brian Enos, I also use several of the other local dealers, prices, and espically shipping can some times be a little cheaper, than going to Dillon directly. Also Dillon's website is so user unfriendly now, I will not order online from them
 
If you go the e-bay route, wait until after christmas, prices are thru the roof at the moment on everything.
 
while we're on the subject

I spoke to several folks in my area, one had bought a used Dillon only
to find out he did not get all of the parts he thought he would.

in this case you have to pay for those that are missing.

I don't know if you have a Scheel's All Sports nearby but I got a 550B for $329.99 a couple of months back while Dillon wants $379. It wasn't the right caliber but they swapped out the conversion kit to the one I wanted for no charge. The manual indexing becomes natural very quickly and it becomes the first thing you do when the handle is returned to the up position. I still kind of wish I would have gotten the 650 but for the price I paid for the 550B I am still happy.

Between the 650 and a LNL AP, I got the Hornady. Cheaper to begin with, cheaper in the long run, and 1k free bullets to boot!
