Does anyone know where I can buy black powder over the Internet? I haven't had any luck finding anything other than substitutes.

I just can't get over how expensive this has become to obtain. I must be super cheap 'cause I'm waiting till June when Friendship Indiana opens. It's cheaper for me to drive there.

where do you live. that would help

about 5 years ago i had problems getting powder. so i got on the goex website. http://www.goexpowder.com/distributors.html
any how on that link above is the distributor list from there i wrote to my nearest distributor asking who do they sell there powder to as i am having problems getting powder. they emailed me back with a list of dealers they sell to. i then started to call them up. i found one close by but was out of powder so then i called up the distributor again and they got in contact with the gun shop made a delivery then called me back when the gun shop had my powder.

This is the closest Distributor you have to you. Give them a call or get on email to see who they sell to. Same time might be able to just get a deal from them.

Make it
i had a reicip that worked well the only problem is getting proper charcoal (making large amounts was diffuclt and the process was time consuming) good thing was that you could increase the salt peter and remove the sulfer when using it in cartrage/precuession type rifles and pistols. you could prob do some resurch to find it the recipie with sulfer was a springfield armory one that i found while doing some resurch in highschool

Yeah....I don't think I'm that much of an enthusiast. Too much room for error for me.

fare enough not for all i do admit that it took some trial and error but it was fun i have to dig it out and make another batch. though it will prob be more expensive the driving around all day looking for some Goex

Oneadam12,

Where I live, In Los Angeles, CA, the "liberals" have passed so many gun control laws at the State Level, The LA County Level, AND, the LA City Level, than nearly all gun shops have shut down, and moved out of LA County, There are only about 6 gun shops left in all of Greater LA, a population area of several MILLION persons, and, only ONE who carries BP products somewhat reliably. Even THAT supplier, DOES NOT carry, actual real Black Powder, he just carries the various brands of Black Powder Substitute.

Things are a gettin tough all over I guess.

N.E. Ways, the substitute powders are okay, if you are a person who likes saccarine instead of sugar, and Turkey Bacon instead of actual real bacon, then, I guess you would LOVE Tripple Sec 7 Black Powder Substitute at $29.00/lb, when you can get it.

So, powder acquisition has been an ongoing problem for me for some time now. One solution, is internet online distributors, who will ship powder to you, which is what I do now. Or, I actually have begun to make my own black powder sometimes too.

I generally deal with a distributor called "The Maine Powder House",

http://mainepowderhouse.com --- NOTICE... there is no "www", DON'T Add it in !!!

They carry BULK quantities of Goex, German Powders, and Swiss Powders. You have to fill out a signature form, which is a simple little one liner you fill out and either mail, email, or fax into them, along with an image of your State DL or ID. If you email it in, or fax it in, you will be able to order from them the same day if you get that done before noon or so. They ship, as soon as your payment clears, and if you use a major credit card, that is immediately.

They will give you somewhat of a break, if you order 25lbs or more, in that they will pay the $20.00 Hazmat fee for ground shipping a hazmat tracked item through the mail, and, they will pay the shipping, so, that right there is on or about a $40.00 savings. (Hazmat will not allow the shipping of Black Powder by air carrier, ground carrier, package services, ONLY.) For example, if you ordered 5lb of Goex 2Fg, and 5lb of Goex 3Fg and 3lb of Goex 4Fg. at their current Goex pricing of $15.00/lb that would come in at, $195.00 for the powder, But that is only a 13lb order, so, you have to cover the Hazmat fee and the shipping feee, so, toss in another $40.00 bux, bringing your order total to $235.00.

If you ordered a nice round, 25lbs of Black Powder, for an additional $150.00, your $20.00 Hazmat Fee AND your shipping charges would be picked up by the company., so, for an additional $150.00, you DOUBLE the amount of powder you get from the $235.00 order, actually, a pretty good deal if you can swing the total order price, for 25lbs of Goex powder at $375.00.

I don't know about you, but 25lbs of Black powder for me, even though I am a fairly advid BP Enthusiast, I am sort of stingy with my powder out on the range, is over a years supply of powder for me, and works out to a big savings for me, even though the $375.00 for the order is a bit stiff to swallow when I place it.

The following pricing list, is lifted right out of the "The Maine Powder House", company web page.

There are other online outfitters out there that ship BP as well, but The Maine Powder House is as good as any, and they are reliable, and generally ship the same day.

I hope this helps.

29 a lbs what. where you getting your powder from. you can get 777 from turners for less that 20 a lbs. angeles shooting range has goes i usually get it there for about 19 a lbs. bain and davis in san gabriel has both for less than 20 lbs as well

Substitutes are easy to come by here, as well as most smokeless powders(I reload a lot of .40 and 9mm for USPSA). I've shot 777 and like it for my inline. A friend of mine is the true enthusiast and is trying to get me back to the roots of muzzle loading. He refuses to shoot anything but black powder, but his stash is getting low. He has done me a few favors and mostly I'm trying to return one, but at the same time enjoy the experience of truer muzzle loading.

Who do you buy your reloading powder from. This is your first source. Say you go to joes gun shop to buy powder for your 9mm or .40. You talk to joe the owner tell him you need to get real black powder. goex or something else. find out who else is in your area that shoots black powder you already have 1 friend so you get a couple more guys together. Let joe know that you have 5 people that need black powder. When joe makes his next order from his powder supplier IE distributor he can add the black powder. He is already paying a hazmat fee for the other powder he is getting so yours is just a carryon to the order. When your powder comes in you guys have to buy it up all of it from joe to show that you are willing to buy the powder when he gets it. exchange numbers with joe. now you have a powder network you just made up with a few guys. when you are low you email each other or call each other get your powder needs together. Call joe place an order then everyone goes in to buy it again. after the second time joe will make sure he takes care of you as you are now a dedicated buyer all of you guys.

The key to scrat's plan is that you need to buy up all the powder your local dealer receives so he doesn't have to store it. Storage, and insurance, requirements for real black powder are more stringent than substitutes or smokeless, so if the dealer understands he won't have to deal with that he'll be more receptive.

Black powder is classed as an explosive and requires a whole other set of permits than modern powders. A local hardware store here caries dynomite and blasting caps and he won't carry B/p because his permits don't include B/p in the same class.
