The decision has been made. Here are the reasons.

10. Good home defense gun for me/wife. No experience with shot guns and wanted to purchase something soon. Next shotgun training class is atleast a month away. Also, recoil even with "less recoil loads" maybe a little much for my wife. Revolver trigger pull was too hard for wife. She hated shooting one. No cash for trigger job. May need more than six/seven shots in a hurry. Never know.

9. Wife can shoot it pretty well. If I go down she can defend herself/avenge me.

8. Springfiled XD. Almost. Didnt quite feel right in hand. Plus grip-safety. Again if I get blasted may not be able to fire back. This maybe a moot point but you never know:)

7. HK USP compact. Like it alot...but... Wife is left handed. Safety is in bad spot for her. Also cant afford one. For that matter cant afford two:p Also non-safety version unavailable and again to much loot. Also, never got too shoot one.

6. CZ p0-1/CZ85b. Almost. Glock was only a litte more than p0-1 and cz 85b. Never got to shoot one, but felt good in hand.

5. Walther p99. Almost. rented this at the range alot. Wife shot well with it in sa and da. Little pricey. Glock was simpler parts wise. Still was really close.

4. Kimber Custom. Pricey. Liked but never got to shoot one. .45 ammo little pricey. Im on a budget. Wife may have had trouble with safety/ recoil etc.

3. Gun shop/Range employee mostly had them(Glocks that is) . Must be something when that many people who are far more knowledgeable of guns have the same thing. Or atleast have one.

2. WWHSD? What would Han Solo Do? "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side kid? I think Han would have a Glock:)

1 1/2. THR Great information and responses from some seemingly great people/personalities. I took all the comments and applied them to my decision. Is it for home? Are you going to carry it? Have you tried revolvers? Go rent/shoot the guns you like? How does it feel in your hand etc? All the questions and comments made me ask others and myself more questions. Therefore more knowledge the better.

1. I shot it. Like how it felt in my hand. Seems like it will be ready to go right out of the box. Have continued to rent/practice with it until I get mine next week. Have gained confidence with it and in it.

Well thats all. Thanks again to all. Responses and comments welcome.

WWHSD?
I thought that was "What would Homer Simpson do?" and expected the thread to be funny. These were Homer Simpson-related gun uses....

10. Put out the lights. Guns help the cripple by letting put out the lights without getting up.
9. Put out the cat, forever.
8. Open the mail.
7. Take down Christmas ornaments.
6. Crack open peanuts (by hammering the peanut with the butt of the pistol).
5. Open beer
4. Open beer
3. Open beer
2. Open beer
1. Open another beer

I bought a GLock 17 about 10 years ago. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it was a 9mm, but that is a personal thing. Regardless, I shot the heck out of it and carried it daily knowing it would work if I needed it. All around I think the 17 is still Glock's best gun. I've had others (22 & 23) but still liked the 17 better. It's big enough to shoot well under stress but not too big. Good sight radius, reliable, and people with smallish hands can still get around them.

I think you made an excellent choice. Don't let my (or anyone else's) talk about the 9mm bother you. If you can put the shot where it needs to go then you are ahead of the game. Also, 17 rounds without a reload has its merits. Just be sure to stay clear of the "spray and pray" mentality and you'll be able to make good use of the extra capacity.

I do have one small point that I disagree with you on, however. Han Solo, being the pragmatic man of reason he is, would have carried a 1911. :)

Welcome to the dark side of evil black-plastic guns......there is no turning back......the G17 is a great combat gun.....get one and shoot the heck out of it....also you can shoot 9mm+p+ safely with the 17..

I'm also planning on getting a Glock 17 as a home defense gun for my wife & myself. What attracted me, besides all the things you listed above, is that there are some reasonably priced .22 slide conversions for the 17. Perfect for practicing on the cheap.

Certainly nothing wrong with a Glock 17

FYI, it's very easy to change the control lever on a USP. You could put it on the right side for her, or put on an ambi one for both of you to use.

Glocks are great SD/combat firearms. Reliable to a fault and that is really what counts.

I didn't get a feel for how experienced you and your wife are with firearms so don't get upset if you already know all this and think I am treating like an idiot,, because I do not mean to.

Glocks have reasonably light triggers, no external safeties and require you to pull the trigger when field stripping the firearm for cleaning. So ALWAYS ALWAYS MAKE DOUBLE SURE THE CHAMBER IS EMPTY WHEN CLEANING. lOCK THE SLIDE BACK AND PUT YOUR FINGER IN THERE TO MAKE SURE IF YOU HAVE TO. Then disassemble the gun.

The other big thing is make sure your finger stays off the trigger unless shooting. If the gun drops, let it drop it's not going to fire.

If carrying make sure you get a good holster that cover the trigger guard completely.

Then there are the basic rules which I am sure you know.

Again, lots of people have ND's with Glocks. Not because they are bad weapons, not because they are stupid folks, they just get too comfortable. We all do this and some guns are more tolerent of this than others (for example a SIG requires the slide locked back to disassemble), The Glock, like any gun, must always be respected.

Once again I just don't want to hear about you shooting your TV or worse because you capped off a round while breaking down to clean it.

Other than that Glocks makes a hell of a fine weapon.

OH and no matter what anybody tells you. DON'T WASH IT IN THE DISHWASHER!!!!

Thanks all for replies

cslinger_- Thanks for your concern:) I am relatively new to firearms' and that was one of the things that had originally made me hesitant about the Glock (the "light" trigger that is and that all the safeties are pretty much in the trigger) However, I will try not to get too comfortable with it as you have stated. Overall, it just seemed that the Glock was the best pistol to go bang for me when I want it too and its pretty much up to me to make sure it does'nt go bang when I dont want it too;)

Will always try to remember too:

1. Treat all firearms as if they were loaded. Always check chamber.

2. Never!!! put finger inside trigger guard unless ready to shoot.

3. Always keep gun pointed in a "safe" direction.

4. Know your target and what's behind it.

It might sound dumb but I recite the rules of firearm safety to myself.

Oh yeah, I also checked into holsters for it. CCW is awy off but I still want to get one. The Sidearmor ones looked the best so far. It covered the trigger and most of the gun.

good choice. Now go out and shoot IPSC/IDPA. :)

TN should have a lot of great places to shoot.

If you haven't got a holster yet, might want to look seriously at blade-tech and cen-dex. Very practical kydex holsters.

I dunno.. Han Solo seems more of a Desert Eagle kinda guy. Or maybe a big ol' .44 revolver. You know -- something that might not be the most practical for everyday carry, but Makes Very Big Holes in things. G17 is a stormtrooper's weapon. Soulless, kinda dinky... but very, very functional.

I had a G30 for a while.. CCW'd like a frickin' brick, a little too fat in the grip for my hands, and just plain didn't suit me. But it was a good gun alright. Don't think I'll ever buy another Glock, but I sure can't fault 'em for doing what they do well.

Sounds like you made a good choice.
What's your wife think? :)

Edit -- I had a Sidearmor IWB for my G30. Terribly uncomfy. Your experience may vary.
