I bought 1000 200 grain .45 ACP bullets this morning from X-Treme. When paying for the order I noticed a City Tax and a County Tax added to the Sales Tax. I checked past orders with them and can’t find these taxes added in the past. I couldn’t get a human on the phone this morning. Is this new? Does any other vendor add this? It was over $3.00 on a $100.00 purchase.

This is something fairly new (last year or so) that all the states have required buyers be charged local/state sales taxes if ordered and shipped to that state. They got sick of people skirting the tax laws by internet purchases and not declaring things on yearly tax forms.

Amazon and others used to not charge sales tax on items shipped to another state... placing the burden of paying the state sales tax on the purchaser. Let me see a show of hands on how many of you filed to pay your sales tax due on out of state purchases... anyone? anyone? So, yes, the states finally figured out they need to regulate online sales.

Since you are in CA, you probably paid state sale tax. I don't know where X-treme is based, so the local tax is probably theirs based on where they shipped from.

Well give me a chance to answer for crying out loud!

My son assumes control of the family trust when my wife and are gone, I'll leave a note telling him to pay the governor for me.

I was always under the impression that if you get charged tax, it would only be sales tax based on where you live. I do not see why one would have to also pay state or county tax. Isn't that something that is taken out of your paycheck if you live in a state or county that has it? For example, I used to live in CT but worked in NY. I would have NY state tax taken out of my paycheck but would get it all back when I filed my taxes due to not being a NY resident.

Some areas (Cities and/or Counties) are allowed to place tax levies separate from the State’s overall sales tax.

Heck, there are even some housing developments that have tax surcharges built into the property tax bill that the homeowner’s have to pay, that aren’t HOA dues.

Dont get me started on Ca’s new bogus 11% tax on guns and ammo. :fire:

They seem to get your $$ one way or the other.

Stay safe.

Texas, for example, is one of the few states that does not have an income tax... all revenue is generated from sales taxes, and other use taxes. Our state sales tax is 6.25%, our local (for me, McKinney) tax is 2%... for a total of 8.25% sales tax. Local can charge up to, but not exceed, 2%... and there are very few locals that don't charge the maximum of 2%.

Understand, many sales tax structures are based on what you sell, not necessarily what you buy, if you see what I mean. In tax-hungry states and locales, they will do anything to get money coming in, including taxing the seller.

Correct. For instance, NY state sales tax is 4%. Counties tack on their own sales tax, usually another 3% or 4%. I believe some cities do the same, but usually a smaller percentage. There is also some variation in what is taxed. For instance, some counties tax the sale of fuel wood, while other do not. People are often surprised to learn they are paying more than just state sales tax.

Charging out of state sales tax is a massive violation of the constitution and the interstate commerce clause. We can thank Amazon and Ebay for screwing the American people in so many ways. This was one way. Once they got so big, states decided that they needed to sue to collect sales tax from them. The Supreme Court ruled that if a company has a significant presence in the state, then the state can force them to pay sales tax. That's fine for the billion dollar companies, but they're hitting the small companies with it as well. I think most states are setting the threshold at $100k in sales before online companies have to start paying them sales tax. Some states are super aggressive about collecting too. It's super disappointing that the founders specifically made protections against states reaching in and taxing the citizens of other states, but our modern government completely ignores it and bastardizes the meaning of the interstate commerce clause. At the rate of inflation, $100k is gonna be pocket change all too soon.

Well I have a show of 1 hand to declaring sales taxes. Used to have a sales tax declared column on the state tax form expressly to collect sales tax from out of state purchases in Maine. I always declaired the max they calculated by income level. It was less than $25 a year and that covered my lazy butt from actually saving and recording on line purchases. Hoping everybody would do the same and avoid what we now have did not work because of noncompliance, oh well!!!

How are states reaching in and taxing citizens of other states? If I buy your product for delivery in Texas, does Idaho reach in and get the Texas sales tax that I pay on the order or does Texas get it?

I "won" a set of grip on gunbroker for $0.01 (a penny). Well, shipping was $6.00+, credit card fee, and the GB fee. They put tax on all of that which ended up being around $0.47 So, the tax was 47 times the purchase price..........

I have cooled on GB given this and some other things I don't care for there, their % on top of the sale price for one.

Y'all can blame South Dakota for sales tax collection. Wikipedia explains
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Dakota_v._Wayfair,_Inc.

When stuff you buy off the internet is all 6.5% or more less than all your in-state sources, the state revenues shrivel up like a polar plunger's wedding tackle and in-state businesses are kicked to the curb. Without an income tax to mitigate the losses, the situation becomes even more dire. Most of us are obligated by law to pay sales tax to fund government operations and infrastructure, so online merchants were just exploiting the difficulty of tax calculation. The states had to provide that software, and they did. Just like the Pittman-Robertson taxes on guns and ammo have been providing safety training, ranges and outdoor opportunities, sales taxes are a necessary evil.
