I'm a glock finatic I own 8 but I recently bought an sr40c and realized there are quality guns besides glocks. Now I'm on to something else because of the deal I found about 1 and a half hours away. Its a springfield xd essential kit. I've had the xdm and sold it and want a plain ole xd.
The deal I found was the xd essential. Which basically it doesn't come with the usless plastic stuff springfield crams into the brief case. Its selling an hour and a half away for 379 or 389 I can't remember.
Now I was told the xd essential was an option starting in 2006. Also I believe around that time sprinfield switched to the melonite finish curing the rust problems. The gun is new in box. I really don't mean to sound dumb. But if this option began in 2006, was it only that year? Is this a pistol that was made in 2006 and just hasn't beed sold? If the gun was produced post 2006 I have nothing to worry about right (finish wise) ? I really want the gun because I've eyeballed xd's for a while and this is a killer deal...I think. I want take advantage of it, but I've read so much stuff I've came up with more questions than answers. Can some of you fellow highroaders please shed some light on this for me, It would be much appriciated, I'm going to get it Thursday assuming its highroad approved :)

for 400 bucks, an XD is a fine pistol, specially new. Can't weigh in on the "essential" but people do still sometimes complain about the finish on the XD, which is why springfield changed it on the XDm. Mine is showing some wear in the normal places (mainly the takedown lever) but I'm not a finish fanatic. No rust=no problem. YMMV

Bought mine in '06. Didnt know about a change in the finish. The only real obvious wear is where the barrel shows thru the slide and the face of the spring and the front sight edges. I keep it in the holster when its loaded, and its always loaded. When I wear it, its sandwiched between two shirts, so it stays pretty well protected.
I love mine. Just dont feed it WOLF! (only time it required a FULL teardown)

Paid $530 for mine. Came with a plastic holster and mag holster, that I never used. Mag loader was nifty, but often forget it at home.

I ask the guy what "essential" meant because I feel 405 out the door was a steal on this gun. My friend swears by his. Retired a 1911 and a glock in favor of the xd. The guy said all it was, was letting you know you aren't getting the xd gear with it. Pistol, mags and paper work thats all. If its new in box thats no guarantee that it was recently produced right? I just want to make sure it has the melonite finish on it. That finish was introduced with the realease of the xd45 I believe. I plan on it being a carry gun but am conserend with the horror stories I've read with the rust issuse. I've been told recent xds don't have the rust problem.

Hmmmm...don't know when the essentials package was first offered, but I only heard about it around a year or so ago-maybe it was a well kept secret, or was it offered later than 2006? As an XD owner, I'd have thought I would have heard about the essentials package earlier, but mebbe not?

I have a pre-Melonite XDSC40 (bought in 2005)-when they upped the mag capacity of the 9mm, I purchased an XDSC9 (Melonite finish) in 2009.

I noticed that it's only recently Springfield has started advertsing the essentials package at their website-it's at the bottom/middle of their site.

Mebbe a call to Springfield is your best bet?

The essential is still a real deal xd right? I may very well be wrong on the dates. I just heard about it recently and then was told about the finish change and I got confused hense the post on thr. I know you guys would straighten it out for me. so more than likely the pistol I'm looking at was produced in the "melonite" era so to speak?

If you are in contact with the seller, ask what the date is on the fired bullet casing that is included. SA AFAIK always has put one with the XDs since they started importing the S2000 as the XD. Just read a semi-official response from SA on another board and it said that the conversion to melonite was Finished in May 06. I get the feeling that the finish started with the .45acp model by comparing some conflicting info from SA on said forum. They aparently didn't make the press release for anything other than the .45 until well after the whole process was complete.

If you are buying a XD45 I think you are safe. Your post really didn't specify other than you recently bought a .40 cal.

I would ask for the date on the casing envelope for sure, if it says 07 or later then you good.

If you keep your firearm clean, I don't think that you will have an issue anyways. The SA rep on the other board said that only a few seemed to have the rust problem. My only guess is that these were "torture test" guns? I've seen people do some silly things with XDs on YouTube.

The essentials package does not include some of the not quite ready for primetime accessories-my first XD didn't come with 'em-my second did (they now reside in my junk box). While better than nothing, I'd opt for a MagLULA over the one they include. I notice S&W includes a MagLULA in their M&P Carry and Range Kit.

Had I know about the essentials package (if it was an option then), I'd have much preferred it over the full ensemble that came with my second XDSC.

I have the 4" Service model XD45acp.... 5500 rounds thru it without ANY failures. Only have cleaned it twice in 2 years. I treat this weapon like crap to be honest. It gets slid around the truck, rained on, muddy, full of **** that would make a billy goat puke and it keeps eating whatever ammo I put thru it. I would carry it into battle, anytime, anywhere. You and your descendants will enjoy it for years to come.

Jeez, good point on checking out the SA website. Limited time offer they are running this so I'm assuming they are current pistols. As long as it post 07 on the spent casing in the box I'm going to snatch it up. I'll probly never see this price again, since this is a limited time offer.

I got an xd 4 years ago... previous owner had put over 20 k rounds doing IPPSC with it I think...
I have shot 1000's thru it... hardly clean it... its more accurate than any other auto pistol I ever had...
I'll never buy another glock... xd's all the way! I think glocks are fine, but xds are better for me.

Not to go off topic here, but why exactly did you sell your XDm, and are now considering an XD? I've heard of a lot of people who started with the XD and decided to 'upgrade' to the XDm (myself included), but never the other way around. Were you displeased with it?

I just noticed on the Springfield site they have the 3 extra magazines and double mag pouch promo in effect-blew thru the fine print and I don't see anything that says the essentials package is not included, except possibly this line:
OFFER CANNOT BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ANY OTHER SPRINGFIELD PROMOTIONS.

I don't know if they consider the essentials package to be a "promotion"?

If you've already decided on the gun, I'd just keep quiet and take a stab at the promo offer after the fact. If they give you any static, complain a bit and tell 'em the promo was the main reason you bought the gun!

I was in Cabela's on Sunday and a guy behind the gun counter sold an XD while I was standing there waiting. He told the buyer that the 3 mags and the magazine holster are a mail-in rebate type thing you send in with proof of purchase of an XD. You can send it in with the Springfield Armory warranty card that comes with the firearm. It should apply to the essentials pack.

Bought mine two days before the promo began :banghead:

Anyway have about 300 rounds though it and not a single malfunction.

@Bobson
I sold the xdm because a fellow shopper at a gun show paid me more for it than i paid for it. Also I didn't notice it being anymore accurate than my best friends xd. Plus at the time I wanted an hk. IMO the xdm is the best looking poly on the market, but the grip was to long for my taste. Also the price alone is making me go get it. 389 before tax is good and I want something in my safe to complement all the Glocks.

The Promo will work for any xd/xdm purchased btw sept1-nov30. Just jump on the xd forum and you will see there are several who purchased the essential package and already received their mags. I bought an XDm and it only took 8 days to get my mags.

The gun your looking at is new....I'm pretty sure it'll have a manufacture date of this yr....and yes melonite finish.

Well I picked up the xd today and ran 300 rounds through it and it was flawless. I like this pistol better than my g19 and g26. Thats saying a lot for me because I'm a Glock fan boy....ex glock fan boy. I'm just a casual fan of glocks now as well as the xd. What a shame my glock bias cost me a lot of time with other quality fire arms. Very pleased with this pistol, even more so than I was with the xdm I sold.
I reccomend any pistol enthusiest take advantage of this essentials package. Getting 3 free mags just puts the promo over the top. The SA mags are some good quality.

I own 2 xd's XD9 and XD40sc both are trouble free never never a issue finish seem fine
to me had XD9 over a year and has been a used hard range gun still looks and acts new
XD40 sc about a month shoots great also sent in for promo deal and in a week got 3 mags and a mag pouch free and it came with 2 mags and 1 pouch and the holster and loader dont use them though ordering a crossbreed for it will be my ccw. Great gun and super easy take down

As soon as I put about three hundred more rounds down range, I'm retiring the G27. I make much quicker follow up shots with the xdsc 9 mm. I bought Galcos version of the super tuck and well pleased with it. I must say this is the happiest I've been with a gun out of the box. This won't be my last xd.
