I put about 120 rounds through it, mostly 230 gr. FMJ and LRN, without issue. It didn't like the bullet profile of Hornady XTP and had several failures to return to battery with it. I bought some 185gr. Mag-Tech Guardian Gold and fired three rounds of it (without incident) before I noticed they had given me a box of in .45GAP (lesson learned). Later in the day, I tried hand feeding some 230gr. Gold Dots and this went fine (will try and shoot some of it tomorrow). I did verify it was an issue with the Hornady bullet by removing the barrel and dropping some rounds of it into the chamber (doesn't seat properly compared to ball or Gold Dots).
Here's my first ten rounds through it at ten yards/two hand standing:

Do you have any photos or measurements for how it compares width wise to the other guns mentioned?

WOW. That actually impresses me. Having spent 4 years in the gun business and 2 decades shooting, I didn't think anything would impress me anymore.

The slides widths are:
Glock - 1.1 something" (sorry my caliper doesn't have better resolution)
Kahr - 1"
XD-S - .91 something"

Thanks, I'm trying to decide if I want the XDs or the shield more at this point.

Lordy loo, that thing is svelte. I was drooling over them before, now I am smitten. What is recoil like? I shot an AMT backup .45 and that was pretty punishing, much more painful than full house loads through my KLCR.

Thanks

Thanks for the pics. It certainly is sharp looking.

I've been considering a polymer and like the Glock's reliability and durability as shown in those torture tests. I just can't take to Glock on an aesthetic level, though. The XD series appeal to me aesthetically.

Me too. Although I'm trying more to decide between XDm and M&P, and will go with the smaller version of the one I pick. The XDs looks to be a nice gun. I'm waiting for the 9mm version, personally, but good comparison with other sub-compacts.

I spent hours trying to locate someone that stocks these last night. I emailed all the LGS around here to see if I get lucky. It seems like this gun is about as hard to find as the shield.

I hope they make one in .40S&W soon, much as I love the .45ACP I just don't like when you get barrels below 4".

Thinner than a G27 and just as long.

I love my Glock 36 but this may have to be added to my arsenal.

Thanks for showing us. Let us know what defensive ammo works. Critical defense and PowRBall ought to feed well. They're shaped more like FMJ.

What is recoil like?
At arm's length I'd say comparable to the CW45 and G27. They all have a slight variance, but I manage them about the same. I would call the XD-S's recoil stout when fired one handed at waist level/elbow locked into the side (this is a position that I've had failures to feed with other small, high power pistols because of the grip strength in my right hand. No problems with the XD-S).

FWIW, here's a photo of the sights:

...and a magazine (comes with two):

at least you all have to opportunity to get them when the LGS have them. Being in CA, I have to wait for it to get "approved" by the DOJ.

Just curious - what is behind your hand in the first picture? It almost makes it look like the XDs has a hammer.

EDIT: I'd also be interested in one where it is held in the palm.

Just when I was about to add a Walther PPS-9 to my collection you had to start a thread on that .45 hand cannon!

I'm curious to see some loads chronographed in that little guy and what they clock. I've had great success with the PPS in that regard, but a .45acp from a 3.3" tube seems like it may leave something to be desired.

I shot another 80 rounds today with no issues; part of that was 230gr. Federal Personal Defense JHP and 230gr Speer Gold Dot HP.

I think that's the end of a dial caliper. It's in this photo as well(just above the slide).

Nice looking, and pretty small for a .45. I was lucky today, as I got to handle the XD-S at my local GS, and it felt good for its size, might have to get one someday. BTW I also got to handle a Sig 938, it also was pretty nice, not bad either on price IMO $699. I didn't get a price on the XD-S as they were both spoken for and not on display. LM

Very interesting. I'd like to see a 9mm version, but then again a little .45 would be sweet to own, too.

Really wanted one of these...LGS called today so I went down and he showed me this XDS and then I looked at the XDM 45 compact as well while I was there...Size wise really not that much difference which was surprising to me...They wanted 569 for the XDS, they want 589 for the XDM 45 c,and 628 on line for the Sig P220 compact DA/SA I've been thinking about before all of this...I think 569 bucks is quite a bit for the XDS,when I just got my Shield there a month ago for 409...I know, apples to oranges, but still...I passed on it for now,and walked out more confused than when I walked in.. If I go for the Springer,I think I'd rather get the XDM 45c...There's barely any difference size wise and you get at least 9 + 1 with the small mag...The sig p220 is very tempting as well..just my .02
