I am somewhat new to handguns and own a mil-spec model1911A springfield armory 45 cal I bought new. I love this gun but have an opportunity to trade it for an XD tactical 45 cal and don't know if it is a wise trade or not. please let me know quick because time is limited

Keep the 1911 if you love it and shoot it well. No sense getting rid of a good gun that you like & shoot well. Now if you really like the XD that much better trade for it.

    Keep the 1911.

Parts are widely available for the 1911. Right now that's not true of the XD.

Don't even think about getting rid of that 1911 for one of those piles of. . . I better not start a flame war. Just don't get rid of the 1911.

I have Mil Spec, and really love it. That being said, I'll make my point like this - Where I am, the XD is more money than the MilSpec. So if you swapped the Mil Spec for the XD, and went out and replaced the Mil Spec; in essence you're getting the XD for the cost of the MilSpec. If they're the same price where you are, its really a toss up. I have heard nothing but great things of the XD. Look at another thread in this forum titled "Which Polymer 45?" The XD is the favorite by an overwhelmingly large margin, vs. respected handguns like the Glock21, and HK USP. On this board, where I respect the members more than other boards, that says something.

Just for the record I would like to point out that my Springfield mil-spec has had probably about 3 jams in about 3000 rounds (combinations of bad ammo and bad mags) and I've never had a jam from my XD but I've only shot about 300 rounds out of it.

You can't go wrong either way, just pick the one you like best.

I own both. Keep the 1911. Save up for the XD.
Or better yet....save up for another 1911.

I'm a big fan of the XD pistols but I'll tell you this. NEVER sell or trade a gun you already like. You'll regret it in the end and wind up buying another. :D

(Wistfully remembering my c1988 Smith and Wesson 686)

I will start off by saying that I am a 1911 fan, own several of them, and a Sub Compact XD in 9mm. The XD is the nicest polymer framed gun you can buy in my opinion.

Recently I had the opportunity to shoot a full size XD in .45 . It shot very well and the ergonomics worked very well in my hand but it was not enough to persuade me to give up my 1911's for it.

I think you will regret giving up the 1911.

It's about what YOU like, not anyone else. They're both good guns, in a similar price range. I do agree with ZeSpectre though, that if you're already fond of a gun then why part with it. I will add to the end of that though "..unless you can get something YOU want more". If you want an XD, save up for it OR take the XD and buy yourself an even better 1911 somewhere down the road. Opinions are like ********, everybody has one.

Do you have the opportunity to fire it first?

Without getting religion about a specific platform, try both and pick the one you like the best.

Always keep a gun you like, i've learned this the wrong way too many times. Save your money and buy the XD45 Tactical at that time if you are still wanting it.

I know most of the time I get the wants bad, if I were to step back and give it some time to pass, that perceived need would subside.

Smart move, because ZeSpectre is right:

I'd wager that more than a few of us have gotten rid of a gun and now regret doing so. My regret was selling a totally reliable, 110% fun Heritage Rough Rider SA 22 that I paid $150 NIB for.

I own an XD9 Service. It's a nice gun, but I prefer 1911s as I shoot them better. I was and am tempted to sell the XD, but I like it enough that I just know I'd regret it.

Valuewise I think you'd be losing money. And like others have already said don't get rid of a gun you like in order to get a gun you may or may not like.
