im turning 21 in less then a month and have my money together to purchase my first handgun, an XD45 service. I have an MD license, but go to school in pittsburgh 9 months out of the year (currently here). When I return home (because this is my only option, correct?) to MD to purchase, is there anything I should expect? is there a waiting period in MD, and if so, can i initiate it before I get home or does it have to be in person.

Lastly, I am allowed to bring this pistol back to school with me (i live in my own place), in the state of PA, and legally possess it. I vaguely remember a gun shop guy 2 years ago saying it is illegal to travel across state lines with a handgun purchased in another state? Any and all advice for my first handgun purchase is needed

Also, any reccomendation for shops in the DC metro area (Im in montgomery county...)

Can't help you with the legal questions, but check out the for sale forum in MDSHOOTERS.COM. I just listed an XD45 service for sale. Bought new in June.

Unless something has changed, he was blowing smoke. My carry license is good in over thirty states. Am I supposed to purchase a separate handgun in every state I choose to visit so that I may carry there? No. By the way, I do believe it IS against the law to purchase a handgun in a state other than that of your official residence, so purchase it in MD not in PA. At least that's how it works in FLA - you can't purchase a handgun if you're from another state. :)

Few things to expect:

1) You have to watch a 5-10 minute video on handgun safety (unless you a military, leo, few other exceptions) Then you get a (somewhat pointless but required) safety card.

2) Buy the gun, wait 7 days. This usually ends up being 7 working days = 10 actual days.

You have to be there to initiate it in person. Painful I know, and the wait is a killer if for some reason you are out of state because you'll probably have to make 2 trips.

No problems crossing state lines with a handgun unless that state has some weird restrictions (California, NY, NJ, come to mind). Nothing that I know of in PA, but best to do some more research there. Warning with that, if traveling in Maryland, have the gun in a locked inaccessible case in your trunk, ammo separate, magazines unloaded. (Not sure about the magazines unloaded part, some different opinions but that is the safest route legality wise)

As far as gun shops. Non in DC that I know off. Also, I think Montgomery county has some weird restrictions on some gun stuff such as receiving ammo through the mail. Other than that I think you are fine.

EDIT: Another option may be to move your "residence" to PA, i.e. get a drivers license there and side track all of the MD bs.

I moved away from Maryland (southeast Baltimore county) about 5 years ago so the laws may have changed a little. Go to the gun shop fill out all the BS paperwork they call in the nics check but you still have to wait the 5 day waiting period for MSP to do a check, if the MSP does not return an answer to the shop within 8 days the gun shop at its discretion is allowed to release the gun. I used to cross into PA all the time to go shooting at Delta, as long as the gun and the ammo are stored separately you are fine.
