XD45 price in Maryland?

A kid at work (Just turned 21) bought an XD45 Tactical 5" the other day. The price was $620. Plus $15 transfer fee. Plus $15 chamber lock. Plus tax. Plus (I think) a bit of switcheroo with the magazines. One of the two 13 round mags turned into a 10. The Springfield catalog shows the Tactical as having 2 full sized mags. The smaller versions can come with one of each.
The transfer fee was necessitated by having to order the pistol in. The dealer had sold the one he had in stock before the kid could legally make a deposit. Springfield includes a lock with their pistol. This was apparently not the "approved" type. Sorry, must charge for the good one.
Have I been out of the new pistol game too long? I thought XD's were a good value. What is the MSRP? What about the going rate in Maryland?
This kid wants an M-4gery with bells and whistles on it next. The dealer has offered to order it AND dress it up for a nominal sum. I wonder.

No MD has a requirement for new (after 2001) handguns to come with an internal gun lock. There was a ruling that the in the chamber gun locks were acceptable. These are the fake casing with a rod locked in to it from the barrel kind of locks. That's what my XD-45 was sold with, it was roughly around the price posted and that was when it came out.

Does the XD have an internal lock? If it does than he didnt need the chamber lock sold seperately. Mine cost $20 for the last gun I purchased.
Also, why the transfer fee? If the store ordered from a distributor or factory, the store already makes profit off the sale selling it to your friend without the need to add a transfer fee. If your friend ordered and payed for it at another store than I can see the transfer fee but not if he bought it from the same store. There is an additional $10 fee for the regulated fireams background check that goes to the state.
If the firearm tax goes through there is another 10% that will be added on. Please keep writing the legislature.

Forgot to add, but I think $620 is MSRP. You should be able to find it cheaper. Which store did he buy from?

Yeah, it's one of those expanding-dummy-round kind of chamber locks. It even has a rubber "primer". The dealer is Chesapeake Guns in Stevensville. Nice little shop, but when I went in I thought he was a bit proud of his stock. I know it can be hard to make a go of the gun business, especially in this state. It's just kind of hard to swallow the need for MSRP+ pricing.
The 15 buck transfer fee was in addition to the state paperwork fee that everyone has to pay. I think if the kid wasn't so green that he could have gotten a bit knocked off. Semiauto ban fever may have overheated the market as well.

Back to the lock issue- I wonder how they arrived at the need for that specific type of lock. I would think that the cable lock or decent trigger lock should sufficiently incapacitate the gun. I suppose you could install all three types at once. Then lock it in a metal case. Encase that in concrete. Of course that gun would still be ON THE STREETS. And bad.:banghead:

No offense but I think your friend was ripped off. There shouldn't be an additional transfer fee if your buying from the store.
A quick glance shows the pistol going in the $580 range. The 4inch barrel versions are in the $500 dollar range. I think the local Gander Mountain had those on sale for $499.
The pistol lock has to be INTEGRAL or an actual part of the gun. Cable and trigger locks are seperate but once that fake casing is locked in it is technically part of the gun. It's a way to get around the stupid MD law. The law is supposed to be about safety but it is really to limit the number of pistols sold in MD.
Have your friend shop around more next time, especially for that AR. I know it's tough to make a run of it in MD selling guns but for some reason a lot of these guys like to sell them for over MSRP and get upset when you point that out.
I remember at Dave's Sport Shop I saw him selling a used gun for $10 under MSRP. I asked about it and he quoted the price for a new rifle as a couple hundred more than what that used one was selling for. So I asked why he is selling the new gun over MSRP. It was because "it costs more to ship onto the eastern shore."
I go to Wink's Sporting Goods and Manchester Shooting Supply now. Good guys with honest prices. Wink's has no black rifles and Manchester keeps selling out. He currently only carries DPMS and Olympic arms but will be picking up Armalite.

I'm obviously not in MD, but the shops around here won't force you to buy a lock if you bring your own.

One even gives store credit for bringing multiple locks.

Wow that sounds a little high to me. I paid $599 out the door here in TN and that included 10% sales tax and our $10 TBI check fee. Mine is a compact and came with night sights as well. I didn't get a great deal at all so based on the fact that I feel I didn't get a good deal I think your friend paid too much. His gun should have come with two 13 round magazines as well if new from the factory.

in late December of '05, I was able to buy one NIB with the GEAR that was
intended to be our areas salesmans sample; for the unheard of price of

If that kid paid more than 550 for his XD he got ripped off big time. An FFL transfer fee to re-order stock? ***?
A 15 dollar lock? ***? These manufacturers aren't stupid, that lock "should" meet the requirements of all 50 states. Your friend got taken more ways than an Octopus playing in a one-man band.
What's the name of the store so I can be sure to never go in there even though I spend a good deal of time in MD going to Cowboy Action Shooting matches.

I live in Northern VA, where gun prices, particularly popular ones, are stupidly high. I paid 530 for my XD 45ACP, no transfer fee and the lock was in the case where it remains unwrapped. I have seen them at local shows for 100 bucks less and here I thought I paid too much.

Tell your buddy to chalk it up to experience and see if he can find another store that values his business.

Moving here from VA was eye opening:

1) The dealers here charge way more than the dealers even in NoVA for ANY type of firearm. It most likely due to the special fees the state charges them for the privilege of being a licensed dealer in handguns, the higher business taxes and expenses in MD, and the reduced demand for firearms in this state.

2) The $15 transfer fee does seem suspicious,as does the missing magazine. MD dealers can get away with this because most gun owners here aren't that aware of the ins and outs of gun purchasing. I doubt that stuff would fly in VA.

3) Due to MD STATE LAW, there is no way to get around having to buy the chamber lock unless your pistol already has an internal built-in lock like the S&W revolvers, Taurus revolvers and semis, the SIG mosquito, Walther P22, or some of the HK semis. Under STATE LAW, each gun has to have its own dedicated lock before the dealer can transfer the pistol to the owner. The only way to verify the "one gun lock/one gun" rule with a chamber lock is to sell one lock with each gun. Did I mention this is a MD STATE LAW?

There is a State Police committee organized under STATE LAW that approves the internal locks that meet the STATE LAW requirements. For two years after the integrated lock law went into effect, SIG, XD, and other pistols were banned for sale in MD because they did not have a built-in "integrated lock." Beretta (located in MD) couldn't sell its pistols in its own state because of this. After the gun lock committee approved the Omega Lock as an "integrated" lock these handguns were allowed for sale, but only if they were sold with an Omega Lock at the time of purchase. Of course, the anti-gun-owners of CeasefireMD went ballistic, but the engineers on the committee told them to pound sand; once installed, the Omega Lock is "integrated" into the pistol. Did I mention this is a MD STATE LAW?

4) The above sucks, but in MD the buyer should be glad the gun mfr. has been generous enough to include a spent shell casing for entry into the "ballistic hocus-pocus fingerprinting database." Otherwise, he would be totally SOL.
