Yep probably should've bid on that one...

Yea, I'm a little surprised by the lack of interest in an original that was put up for bid under such reasonable conditions.
Maybe the collectors were all at a convention or something and missed that one.

You never know what guns will go for, antiques or repros. I stopped bidding just before one sold at a local auction because I had my eye on something else, and let a good one slip from my hand. Turns out the one bidding against me really didn't want the gun, I think he was in cahoots with the auctioneer. They probably resold it at another auction. I heard him say a dirty word when he bid after me and I didn't go higher and they had to bang the gavel. So I kinda busted their game.:p

Howdy

Personally, I never bid at online auctions. I won't bid on something I can't examine with my own hands. That No. 1, 2nd Issue sure looks nice, but I'm a little suspicious because the hammer looks just as shiny as the rest of the gun. I'm pretty sure the hammer and trigger should not be plated. Not 100% sure though. The only No. 1, 2nd Issue I have has the usual silver plating starting to wear away and reveal the brass frame, and blued barrel and cylinder. SCSW says they also came completely nickel plated, but I don't know if that should include the hammer. So I am a little suspicious that nice shiny one on gun broker could be a refinish. Which could bring the value down considerably. Again, can't tell without first hand examination, which is why I never bid online. The other thing about Tip Ups is the split spring that pulls the bolt down is often broken, with one half missing. Can't tell that from the photos either. So maybe you missed out, maybe you didn't.

They should make a repro of this gun, it was heavily carried as a personal defense weapon in the ACW.

The gun in question is chambered for the 22 short cartridge. Although over 100,000 of them were made, they were not very powerful for self defense. The model you may be thinking of that was often carried during the Civil War was the Number Two, Old Army. A much larger revolver, chambered for the 32 Rimfire. There is one on Gun Broker right now that looks pretty good.
