First off, the things I know:
- Big 5 carries Mosins all the time.
- Big 5 has Mosins on sale regularly.
- Mosins can be hit or miss.
- The M44 is not on sale at Big 5 this week.
- The M44 on hand at my local Big 5 is gorgeous with a spectacular barrel.
- It's easily twice what it ought to cost ($179) since this isn't a sale week.

The question: Should I say "screw it" and buy it (at least trying to price match) because it's a very nice example and still inexpensive overall, or should I wait for another good one to come along when the price is better?

Personaly, I would try and find a better price. I just bought 2 M44's last January, one with laminate stock, and one with the regular wood. Both look brand new, and cost a total of $175 plus shipping. Good luck

I'd say wait also and check either tomorrow or Thursday, they break ads really weird sometimes three days BEFORE the ad comes out. $89 is better than $179.

Found a more worn-out M44 at a local Joe's for $89, I'll see if Big 5 will match it. Otherwise I'll wait. Thanks for the talking down. :p

There must be something wrong with me, but I really like the M44 aesthetically too.

Spending $179 on a Russian M44 is insane. If you're going to spend that kind of money, just kick in a few more bucks and get a Finn or a K31.

Talk to the manager on duty, they can override the price on the item and give you the last sale price. They don't have to, but they often will do it if asked. I used to be a manager for Big 5 years ago.

Kingjoey is right. They will give me sale price all the time (I used to go there a lot before I started casting & reloading, and they knew my face).

Especially if you tell them another local gunshop has it for $89.

Just wait until it goes on sale. The same thing happend to me, went to big 5 to buy one, neither the 38 or 44 were on sale at the time and they couldnt tell me the next sale dates. :banghead: but luckly they go on sale about every other week around here and I bought it a few days later for $79. If that one sells before the sale comes around, ask to see the other ones in back.

I remember when I was considering paying $125 to $150 for a refurb 91/30- because I wanted to be able to examine the rifle before buying it. That was a little bit much (more than mail order anyways), but was only a little bit more. $180+ for an M-44 is INSANE, in today's economy. For that price, I bought a well used, but with excellent bore, M-39 Finnish Mosin, which will shoot laps around an M-44.

Yes. I agree, the M39 was the finest version of the Mosin-Nagant made. Well worth the 200 or so they cost.
