Yes I said it, I'm considering joining NRA

Once I found this: https://membership.nrahq.org/forms/signup.asp?CampaignID=nranews I considered joining as an "associate" member to send a message to our new vice president who wrote the idiotic yet tyrannical semi auto ban. I'm not considering joining because I like the nra because I don't. HOWEVER I want to send a message to Biden and Friend that the most visible gun lobby just doubled it's membership. A glossy magazine will NOT save the 2nd amendment so I won't miss it. I get my news FASTER from the internet anyway.

I won't get into the laundry list of nra's past behavior which is the reason I haven't joined. If you want to know then PM me. I prefer to focus on how much I love Gun Owners of America for their hard hitting specifics.

We've had a dozen+ threads encouraging people to join the nra since the election. Those of us who sincerely don't like the nra have ignored the call to join, but I hope to reach those who don't like the nra and encourage them to join as an associate member. I believe this is the best way to send a GROUP message to Biden and Friends. I believe it also sends a message to nra that the cost of membership is too high. People will mock that but it's true. Yea yea I know, $35 or $25 is nothing. I get that. But I also understand the mentality of the public. The public sees $35 as money that pays the gas bill. They see it as losing a night out at dinner. HOWEVER, $10 memberships will get a million people to join overnight if they only knew about it.

I don't like encouraging others to do things that I myself won't do, so here ya go. Here's a screenshot of my bank statement from just a few minutes ago:

send a GROUP message to Biden and Friends

Exactly. I joined up earlier in the year, and I am constantly trying to encourage my dad and some of my friends to join. I figure if i badger them enough they will get around to it.

Thank you for that consideration. I will not appologize for my crudness on previous threads but rather reiterate my position that numbers are what will sway the opposition. Big numbers in top national RKBA orgs. is a must as well as no compromise state level groups like RMGO org.
I will be sending my $ to them also.
There is no joke that the top tier of government is now populated with rabid anti gunners who are itching to go on a vendictive witch hunt of gun owners and their collective organizations and if we have our differences lets sort them out when our guys have the majority or as the saying goes we will all hang seperately.

Cool. I've noticed NRA's membership numbers tend to swell in more challenging times and being able to say you represent 5 million rather than 3.5 million (or whatever it is) sure can't hurt.

But if they annoy you, it might be worthwhile to preemptively strike on this option:
Q: How can I reduce the amount of mail I receive from the NRA?

A: Simply email us at [email protected] or dial 800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not Promote" list. This will significantly reduce the amount of mail you receive without affecting important mailings, magazine service, or your membership renewal.

Even those of us that like them can get a little worn out with the amount of stuff that shows up. Or, for that matter, somebody calling during dinner to explain a unique opportunity to buy a leather bound book explaining the history of the second amendment.

If the relationship starts off strained I wouldn't wish to be a fly on the wall when the phone rings offering the 290 episode collection of a rebadged "Tales of the Gun" on VHS. I haven't invoked the option but I'm pretty much immune to membership upgrades - I think if they upgrade me one more time they start sending me money - probably not in their best interest.

All of us should belong to the NRA, while you may not agree 100% & even think they have went against us in some area's, the NRA is the 800lb gorilla in the room. There voice gets herd.

I would never join the NRA. I worked as an intern with the Obama campaign, know Obama's positions well, and his background as a constitutional lawyer. I personally don't think Biden will influence him in this regard, and am 100% certain that legislation banning semiautomatics is not in our future, or at least not from President Obama's desk. What they will do with laws about large capacity clips and full-autos I cannot say, but it is a risk I am more than glad to take considering the mess the last republican administration created.

Ain't English grand? :D

<edit> Maybe you should get together with the guy that put up the thread entitled "WTS: Many handguns- have to thin the heard- NJ" and exchange vowels. ROFL!

ggarfield965, then why do you not look at his voting record when in the Illinois senate? What the NRA says is indeed ACCURATE. Are you attempting to troll? Do you not understand it takes only a mere second or two to drop a magazine and insert another, magazine limits do nothing but anger people like me. Limits on magazine capacity are incrementalism, nuts will still either bring 50 of them preloaded or just buy preban mags. I'm going to start buying 30 round magazines by the dozen if I can actually find an AR-15 lower for sale.

What they will do with laws about large capacity clips and full-autos
They can ban high capacity clips all they want, that won't make a lick of difference to me. I mean, if they go below 8 rounds M1 Garand owners might be a little ticked, but who cares? Our 30 round magazines will be safe.

Oh, and "full-autos" have been heavily regulated (and banned in many states) since 1934. What new laws regarding "full-autos" are you envisioning? Or are you, like most lefties, confusing semi-auto military rifles with machineguns?

ggarfield, I will take your comments at face value and assume they are heartfelt - but with all due respect, I couldn't disagree more.

President-elect Obama has consistently - and provably - espoused one of the most anti-firearm ownership agendas of any current political figure. That's not my opinion, that's a simple, demonstrable fact based on what he has said on the record and on his voting history.

Obama was a "constitutional lawyer" for ACORN in a civil action to secure unrestricted rights for undeserving clients - how does that square with our principals of equal rights?

Within the context of the fact that he is the American President-elect, are we to disregard the man he has always been in favor of the man we wish we was?

I believe that you believe Obama does not present a clear and present danger to our 2nd Amendment rights - but, this is a man who described the Constitution as a "charter of negative liberties" (radio interview, 2001) - so I'm not going to buy into the idea that he will suddenly become someone he has never been.

Your membership fees are NOT paying for a glossy magazine. Your membership fees are paying for lobbyists.

I don't agree with a lot of what the NRA does, nonetheless, I'm a Life Member. Sign up for EPL -- easy payment plan -- $25 quarterly until you're paid up. Less than you're paying for gas. About the cost of a box of ammo.

Biden helped write the last Assault Weapons Ban.

Rahm Emanuel -- Obie's new Chief of Staff -- pushed the Clinton AWB through to passage. The ducks are all in a row. Obama's record on gun ban legislation is clear.

Join the NRA and send a message.

www.change.org and send a message.

Here's the Obama plan from www.change.org --

“As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent; as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.”

"Thinking" of joining, huh?

Gee, well don't hurt yourself. "Thanks". You really think that if membership were $10 instead of $30, millions would join? That's a laugh - lazy butt leechers won't pay a dime to help us, let alone $10. If you are a adult gun owner and have been for more than a couple of years (long enough to understand that politicians are constantly trying to restrict firearm rights), and you are NOT a member of the NRA or GOA or SAF or some gun rights group, giving a measly $30 a year to support your rights, then I'll just say it right now - you are a leech and in my view, not worthy of gun ownership.

I agree that we should stand up for second amendment rights, I just hate the NRA. After all, the NRA distorted Obama's record on gun control. Some things about him were true, others, like the idea he wants to ban the sale and production of handguns nation wide, are not at all true. Finally, what he did in the Illinois senate will not reflect what he does nationally, because he believes it is the duty of the states to micro-manage guns. Further, he had Chicago streets and children very much in mind as an Illinois Senator, but I think he realizes that it is not in the interest of rural America to ban handguns and register guns. If he ever tries, I think he will be laughed at.

Finally, what I said earlier about semi-automatics was not exactly what I meant, so please forgive me. I had hunting rifles, such as the BAR and such in mind. I most definitely know what the difference between a semi-automatic rifle and a machine gun is, but I don't think about it a lot because I don't own any and don't intend to. My family has a long tradition of hunting and using shotguns and rifles in Wisconsin, and the day I see legislation arise to restrict pump action shotguns and semi-automatic hunting rifles I will be there advocating for the second amendment. I honestly feel for the people that do own and want to own assault rifles as they should be able to, but there are bigger issues right now that will be affecting my politics.

I gave two of my kids 2 year gift memberships.

My son is an Iraq war vet and my daughter is a Chicago school teacher and teachers union member that actually includes a class segment on the BoR.

I gave them each a 2 year gift membership.

I've been a member for years and I've never had the flood of junk and/or begging mail I hear about on the boards. Maybe I'm just lucky or my house is hard to find. Not sure which.

If you have a family member that is even vaguely like-minded on the issue of RKBA then pitch in and send them a 1 year gift membership. I've found that reading American Rifleman for a year has changed my Son-in-Laws attitude over time.

He even takes the old issues to the firehouse with him and leaves them for the other smoke eaters to read. You'd think that might cause problems in a Chicago firehouse, but we seem to get more of his buddies from the trucks out to our "Red Dawn" shoot every year.

"After all, the NRA distorted Obama's record on gun control. "

As a 60+ year Illinois resident I can, with reasonable assuredness, say - put that Kool Aid pitcher down and step away from the issue until you actually look at the hard record.

(The Democrats are the only people I know that when confronted with someone's actual voting record and speeches from the floor declare it "a personal attack".)

I know you love what BO stands for and that's great. As an intern I'm guessing you're pretty young as in under 30 years old, maybe under 25 and have a bit more to learn on the issue. But the reality is he has a bad record on gun control issues.

I'm guessing that it's driven primarily by (small i) ignorance. Obama was a political "gofer" for Emil Jones and a part of the Daley machine for his years in the Illinois legislature. The only thing he knows about guns and gun control is what Daley, Jones and company told him about them. Neither is exactly a paragon of honest information by any means.

I'd be willing to bet that he also does not have a single gun owner in his immediate circle of friends, advisors and acquaintances.

Chicago, with the toughest gun control laws in the nation, has the highest murder rate. That's not a coincidence and it's not the fault of "lax Indiana gun laws". His own Senatorial predecessor and neighbor Carol Moseley Braun was robbed on the street less than 3 blocks from Obama's house a few months ago.

Do both yourself and your candidate/President elect a favor and get a lot more education onthe issues befiore you decide who to "hate'. That's a far too strong and inappropriate word for someone that you may have political difference with. The NRA is not Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox, it's 4 million of us, voting American citizens that believe in something.

I don't "hate" NARAL or the ACLU, I just think they are dead wrong on some things. So do all of the membership a favor and don't be a hater.

Hmmm I could go for some Arby's too.

Knee Jerk

Don't get me wrong, I applaud all of you that "recently" joined the N.R.A. but it seems to be kind of a "knee-jerk" reaction to the political environment these days. How long have you owned a gun???? YOU SHOULD HAVE JOINED THE N.R.A. THE SAME DAY YOU BOUGHT YOUR FIRST GUN!!!!! (Easy now...my personal opinion)
I've had this argument with my roomate a dozen times (kicker....he's Australian too!!). He bought a nice, new Springfield XD and 1. it sits in his desk drawer at home being a paperweight and 2. He hems and haws about joining the N.R.A. Yeah...maybe I'm a little biased (been a life member for some time)...but he drives me CRAZY with his non-commital attitude. My opinion??? CARRY the nice new gun you bought and DO EVERYTHING to secure your rights to be able to do so here in the good ol' U.S.A.

--The good people of this country that go about purchasing, carrying, and enjoying firearms the LEGAL way are the ones paying the price with rules upon rules.
