Yet another Recomend a Rifle Scope Thread

Okay, Okay, I know I am opening up another can of worms here, but I would like some input. I need a new scope for my Savage .270. This is primarily a hunting rifle and nearly all shots will be under three hundred yards. My current scope (a Simmons Eight-pointer which came with the rifle) has gone to parralax heck. I HAVE to stay within budget here, as I don't have a lot of disposable income. Additionaly, the scope on this rifle now is completely unusable but I can't stand being away from shooting long enough to save more than about $220. (The rifle has no iron sights.)

So, here is my list:
Nikon 3-9X40 Buckmaster
Leupold VXI 3-9X40
Busnell Elite 3200 3-9X40
Burris Fullfield 2 3-9X40

No Leupold VXII, no Burris Black Diamond, etc. Can't afford them, know that they are good scopes, but not in my budget. So, any feedback or recomendations for those on my list?

B/W the VX-I and 3200 I would go 3200. As a matter of fact, I did.

A buddy of mine has a VX-1 in 3-9x40 and likes it. He also has a VariX-II. Sez he can't tell the difference between them. From what I've read, the old VariX-II has become the VX-I.

I just got through mounting a VX-I 2-7x33 on my rifle. It seems like a nice scope. $179.99 at Cabelas with free shipping.

I'll throw in a vote for the Nikon. They are putting out some tremendous scopes for pretty reasonable prices. Burris is good stuff too. As a matter of fact I don't think you would be displeased with any of the scopes on your list.
If your open to suggestions, one of the best values going right now is over at www.bearbasin.com They have a closeout on the B&L Elite 3000 3-9X40 for $149. These are the Elite 3200 scopes without the Rainguard coating. I have purchased 2 of these and am very pleased. These are not cheap scopes. If I can scrape some funds up I may buy another and salt it away.

I'd go with a Nikon Monarch rather than a Buckmaster. They are better quality.
Bear Basin has then for $239.

FWIW, I've done side by side comparisons with Nikon, Leupold, and Bushnell and Nikon has them beat for brightness and clarity.
Also, Leupolds don't come with scope caps so you'll need to figure that cost into the scope if you buy Leupold.

I haven't done a side by side comparison between the scope you list and have never looked through a 3200. I've seen the 3000 and the 4200 scope.

The one I would recommend in your price range isn't on your list - the Weaver Grand Slam. As bright and clear as VariX IIIs at a VariX II price point. I have a recent VariX II and it does not compare to my Grand Slams. $240 or $250 shipped from BearBasin or SWFA.

The Monarch is a fine scope, don't have much experience with the BuckMaster. With the Leupolds, you're paying for a name and the warranty which is first rate.

I would also suggest the Weaver Grand Slam it is a great scope for around $250.00 but I have heard good things about the Sightron SII and they have a 2.5 - 8.5 by 42 MM on sale at Midway for $169.00 that I have been thinking about picking up if you would like to look go to midwayusa.com and look at the clearance items under optics.

I like the Bushnell (B&L) line a bit better than Leupold, but my all-time favorite low-price scope is by Swift Optics. I have two, and would buy another.
Hsll of Shame, or the ones that gave me the worst service would be Tasco and Sightron.
I lost my links, but EABrown sold Swift Premier, a search should turn him up.

I've only looked through one Sightron and it was a pretty high dollar model. It was OK but nothing special. I've managed to not buy one yet. The CSR at a major online reseller that carries Weaver and Sightron assures me that, in his opinion, the Weavers are considerably better. Period! Without regard to cost.
