I was looking into getting a family membership to the YMCA.

Unfortunatley the Code of Conduct states:

Specifically, actions not adhering to these guidelines and are not permitted include:
...
•Carrying or concealing any weapons devices or objects which maybe used as a weapon.
I would like to write them about this policy, and I could use some input.

Concealed means concealed. 24-Hour Fitness has essentially the same policy. It doesn't stop me. However, packing heat don't work very well wearing shorts, TV shirts and cross trainers. The heat is in the locker.

I, too, thought about writing a letter regarding this, but it would do absolutely NO good.

yeah, the word "construed" sucks.

And, I'm at this point unaware of any Tactical 5.11 workout clothing, or

... CQB introduces the conceal-a-weapon jock strap. LMAO.

Hmm anything that can be used as a weapon? My friends and I use our local YMCA to train in and we use staffs, canes, knives and short blades. Never had a word said to us.

The one up here is posted.

Used to be a member, but then I realized they have nothing to offer (me, at least), and over charge for memberships.

So it's the Y's "Code of Conduct." It's a rule, not an actual law, right?

Concealed means concealed, and while I'd never advocate breaking a law in a public forum, I must admit, I've never been a stickler for adhering to dumb rules or policies.

The Y is a private business and as such can make rules that apply to their place of business. I respect that, but while I would not expect to encounter a life-threating situation inside the building, the problem is going to or coming from there and that is no different that any other place that have such rules against carrying.

As stated, the concept of concealed carry is just that; nobody should see a weapon or know you are carrying a weapon. Outside of people that keep a gym locker to store workout clothing, toels and such, carrying a gym bag with you gives you the opportunity to keep a carry weapon hidden when inside the building.

It's strange that businesses that post rules against concealed carry usually provide a very brief description of prohibited items. Guns, knives, defensive spray, batons and such. But I have never seen any sign or heard any discussion about hands or feet. People trained in the martial arts can very well defend themselves(or attack!) to the point of using deadly force, but where does it say you cannot carry your hands or feet in a posted place??? :scrutiny:

I am the President of our local YMCA, and I carry a firearm with me 24/7 including Board meetings! The policy must be local as we have no such policy, and I am not aware of anything from National Y to that effect.

If it is not unlawful to ignore the rule then do it anyway. If it would be unlawful, then seek to have the rule changed. If I can be of any help let me know.

...but where does it say you cannot carry your hands or feet in a posted place???
This is why we have the 2nd amendment. It guarantees us that we can keep and bear our arms (unfortunately, it says nothing about legs).

They don't have free weights?
A 20 lb dumbbell or a 25 lb plate both make a pretty good weapon.
:banghead:

I guess you can’t carry either of those.

Then there are those deadly garrotes, I think they call them jump ropes.... :scrutiny:

There are also all the bats, rackets, clubs, etc. just laying around waiting to go off and injure the closest poor unsuspecting soul......:cuss:

This really isn't a big deal. Sure, I ignore posted policies on this issue where I live, it's concealed so who will know? I would never carry at the Y unless I knew there was some hit squad after me. I go to work out. Plus the urban Y I go to, people get their lockers robbed frequently, so leaving anything valuable in there would be dumb. Leave it in your car, and get a car alarm.
