Try to find the newest edition of Handloader Magazine. Great article by John Barsness (my favorite writer) about the 28. You'll be pleased.

28 ga. a REAL shotgun....

I've been fooling wiht .410's off & on for a LONG time, even to having several Paradox-bored by Jim & Allen at Clearwater reboring.

Occassionally I have gotten what I'de call killing patterns for smallgame @ 25 yds.

I got an NEF 28ga. modified choke single barrel, and it has proven to be a REAL shotgun, with nearly 10 yds. more than my "best" .410 loads.
I am loading 13/16 of an oz. of #7 shot over equal volume of Hodgdon's Triple Seven powder in Mag-Tech brass cases with Circle Fly wads cut for brass cases.
This si a sweet set-up for a subsistance hunter.
I also made up a few loads with a .530 roundball and four #2 buckshot as anti-varmint insurance. (There are some brash mtn. lion around here, and an occassional meth mechanic back in the woods that might flip out if you stumbled onto their operation....)

Light loads in a large bore gun, or a samll gauge shotgun make less noise/bring less attention.
Time may come when you don't want to advertise yoru prescence anymore than you need to.
Meanwhile I use only as much powder & shot as is neccessary.

Probably because it's in the April 2008 issue. Just got it this past week. On the front cover "28 Gauge! Small Bore, Big Performance"

I'm a "pot hunter" and take most of my grouse off logging roads. When my second I.J. Champion wore out, I went with the H&R single barrel, again in 28 ga. It suits me just fine, and yes, I have a number of "better" shotguns. Essex
