You know you're a gun nut when you see a picture of an art display using over 10,000 rifle cases, and shudder thinking about how much reloading you could have got done with 'em. ;)

John Volkening, right, and Gerald Paoli look at a plowshare sculpture made from thousands of spent shells meant by an artist to represent the number of American military and Iraqi civilians killed in the war in Iraq (news - web sites), at a multimedia exhibit called ``Eyes Wide Open,'' Thursday, March 18, 2004 in Chicago. A peace group unveiled the display protesting the war in Iraq on Thursday. (AP Photo/Brian Kersey)

Enjoy.

EDIT: Now that I think about it...this post might be more appropriate for the reloading forum. :p

That's almost as bad as this ghastly piece of "art"...

Details of the sculpture are here. To whet your appetite:
More than 7,000 weapons were deactivated by the artists before being welded into place. Most were deactivated with a plasma torch, which completely destroys one side of the firearm — even though it looks in perfect shape.

:what: :barf: :fire:

Actually, I think these pieces are kinda pretty. I don't agree with the anti slant being put on them , however. And "weapons seized in crimes" has a rather ominous Orwellian connotation if you ask me.

There's a comment board at that Ontario museum. Here's what I'd write:

"Those who beat their swords into plowshares plow for those who don't."

:D

That weapons block is pretty cool, IMO. I think it would have been cooler of the weapons were not deactivated.

Come to think of it, seeing as how the pieces are deactivated, a darker, more fitting title of this piece would be "Your freedom".

Damn, I thought that was the new brass separator from Ronco Reloaders! :D

No more pawing through buckets of brass and hours of separation! Now, with the Ronco Reloaders Separator, you to can spend more time doing the things you enjoy, rather than hours picking through spent brass!! With a few simple passes, your brass is neatly separated into the various calibers.

And if you call now, we'll give you the Pocket Fisherman for free!!! :neener:

I thought that this was going to be a good thread along the lines of...

You know that you're gun nut when... you spend more time trying to figure out what kind of gun Lara Croft has than actually watching her do her thing on the movie screen.

... you put on after shave before going out to dinner and your wife asks "when did they start making Hoppes 9 in another scent?"

... you say to a visitor "just let me move this/these rife(s) so that you can have a place to sit".

etc etc

You guys sure this thread doesn't belong over in L&P? I thought the second picture (the block of arms) was a representation of what J."F" Kerry is really thinking when he talks about supporting the 2A. :D

Ughh, the cube kida reminds me of the movie "Aliens" where humans are locked up in aline slime.

I couldn't go to see the first sculpture, I would find it hard to not put a few handfuls of brass in my pockets. Some people can't walk past a penny on the ground, I can't not pick up a piece of brass.:uhoh:

"Some people can't walk past a penny on the ground, I can't not pick up a piece of brass."

Heck, that's me! I have more brass than gun I shoot!

You know you're a gun nut when.....

you aim, pull the trigger, almost get knocked down by the kick, see a huge cloud of smoke, nail the 50 yard bullseye, and realize that you're grinning from ear to ear. My first experience with guns at scout camp at age 12. Rifle was a .45 muzzleloader. I've had the "itch" for guns ever since.

You know you're a gun nut when...

...they put in a multi-million dollar golf course in the middle prime real estate and you wonder how many shooting stations and IPSC courses were lost.

You know you're a gun nut when:

1) You go to another city on vacation and immediately begin seeking out local ranges.

2) You PLAN your vacation around local ranges.

3) You SKIP vacation because you'd rather pay for range fees at the range down the block.

You know you're a gun nut when you'd title eschato's posted sculpture something like "Reaping the Whirlwind" — what a bunch of farmers end up with when they take up genocide and terrorism. Yes, I know that you don't reap with a plow; there's a better title out there. My point is that the impact of the sculpture might not be what the sculptor and exhibitor guessed they'd get from the American public.

If I had the skill, I'd want to use the brass to cast a sculpture of a mother holding a rifle.

About Preacherman's post: you know that your parents, your other elders and various students of history have taught you why we have guns, when —

you look at the cube that Preacherman's posted and see it as "Sculpture 1 of 2."

"Sculpture 2 of 2" depends on the first sculpture for its creation. Think of Europe in the 30's; China in the 40's, 50's and 60's; Indonesia; Cambodia; Uganda; Rwanda; hundreds of other places. "Sculpture 2 of 2" is a cube like the first, but made of human bones...

You know your a gun nut when...

as soon as you get home from a hard day at work (especially for a friday) and the first thing you do is have a beer and peruse THR!

:D :D

Which is exactly what I'm doing now!

That "cube" reminds me of the Borg...

[Borgstein voice]We are Democrats. Resistance is futile. Turn in your guns Mr. and Mrs. America. [/Borgstein voice]

FUTILE MY ARSE!!! WHAT PART OF THE 2nd AMENDMENT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?! MOLON LABE!!!

I can see melting down guns...

If you're making a howitzer. :D

A fun thing to do might be to go see the cube with a shooting friend, and if there's a crowd within earshot of it, start pointing to parts of the cube and say "Hey! I have two of those, and one of them. Yup love them 7.62x39's- fun to shoot and I have 2 crates of cheap ammo in my closet at home.OOH, is that an enfield? I have one of those on order, it should show up on my doorstep in about 3 days. How many of those rifles do you have at home?":D
