I voted 9mm, and carry it at all waking times except while at work and while traveling to and from work (at my full-time job, in EMS.) At work, I'm disarmed; while traveling to and from, I carry a gun in .32ACP. My job is three days each week.
I do have another job, one night each week, in pizza delivery. The 9mm rides with me then, too.
45 ACP in a Lightweight Commander. I carried it for 2 years in SE Asia, it never let me down. While a 9mm may expand, a .45 ain't gonna shrink. Big holes let out more blood.
I can't vote for just 1, because for me, it varies between .380 in the summer, .38 Special and 9mm the rest of the year, 10mm when camping/hunting/hiking, and .357 when working on my parent's property. So that's 5 different calibers, depending on time of year, type of clothing, and environment.
Fewer big holes vs more smaller holes, two sides of the same coin.
If I can't dress around either of my compact class carry guns then I weigh the risks and either go without a gun or don't go. I haven't bought a pocket gun or as my son calls them, hooker guns.
