Your favorite Red Dot? Why?

Santa brought me one of these from Turnbull:

It allows me to mount an RMR footprint red dot on my Rossi '92 in place of the rear sight. I've used some variants of "red dots" on weapons in the Army, but this style and application is new to me. The rifle is in 44 magnum and will get mild use around the farm - not a truck or beater gun by any means.

Budget is a hard limit of $250 OTD, so that seems to put some brands like SwampFox and Vortex higher on the list than Trijicon or Holosun.

What do you use?

 

The only one I have tried is a Burris Fast Fire 111 and it does a good job.

 

I use Burris Fast Fire II’s and III’s, and Dual Illumination Trijicon RMR’s, obviously the latter when always on, never fail, illumination is critical. I didn’t have any complaints with the Vortex Venom sight either, and the new version Bushnell is actually pretty competitive (old version was light activated and couldn’t be turned on in the dark).

 

Vortex Venom if that $250 is firm. I was in the same situation (but for a handgun) and after doing the research I decided to up my budget and get the Holosun 507C X2. Fifty bucks more for a lot of extra features.

That was a year ago and something better might have come along. FWIW I have been very happy with mine and do think having the extra reticles is worth the price of admission.

 

I have at least one of each red dot model that Swampfox sells. Most are mounted on pistols with a few on AR rifles and one on my Mossberg Shockwave. I haven't had any issues with any of them. Plus Swampfox has excellent customer service along with their "no questions asked 50,000 round" warranty.

And if you go to Swampfox's website, they have a real good sale going on right now on their red dot sights.

Aimpoint M68- reliable and durable in nasty environments

 

I have a lot of them and some are real nice but I’d have to pick my Acog reflex.

No batteries, he’ll no electronics, no brightness adjustments as it does it all by itself via ambient light and hell for stout.

Oh, that won’t fit on an RMR mount though, I have those too and they are also well built.

 

Yeah, I loved my ACOG on my M-4. We used a piece of electrical tape on top as a brightness adjuster for those bright and sunny desert days. Smaller chevron means more hits on smaller targets.

This just isn't an application for the ACOG or the Aimpoint M68. Those are for the more modern "sporting" rifles.

Depends on the application.

SIG Romeo 5 for the ruh-roh home defense 9mm carbine. Motion activated, easy to find the dot with even a hurried cheek weld, easy to find button controls, no need to remove for battery replacement. Not sure if you can find a mount for your application.

I have Burris Fastfire 3 on Browning Buckmark. Can be a challenge to acquire quickly on a pistol but it should not be an issue with your rifle. Mine has been thoroughly abused yet still runs great and holds zero.

 

For a budget dot:
Old yellow letter Bushnell TRS25, it’s resided on my Saiga’s Ultimak for over a decade and 1000s of rounds of 7.62x39 down range. It won’t die.

 

I only have 1, a Vortex Venom 3 moa. Works well. Got it here for $125.

Well actually it is the bulk version. Comes in a 8 lb jug. It is called Promo.

When powder availability is good, this is a very low cost option and I have a favorite load or two using it for most all of my handguns.

Before too long (this year probably) my stash will run dry.

As far as them no magnification optics, I really do not use them much.

 

Sig Romeo 5 is made by Holosun but runs $100 or more less. Get the 2 MOA dot inside the 65 MOA circle. These are running $150 used or $185 new on Amazon:

I have a Gen 1, Gen 2, and Gen 3 TRS-25.

The Gen 1 is just fine except the glass tint is awfully dark by today's standards.

The Gen 2 version was the best one made. Nearly untinted glass, small dot, and a very good brightness range.

The Gen 3 is a physical look alike, but it is severely cheapened. The dot is not as small and the brightness range isn't as great low to high as the Gen 2. This one has the best through vision as the emitter housing is smaller and repositioned, but that's the only "better" part about the Gen 3.

 

I put a vortex venom on my wife's Ruger PC carbine, and it's great! I'd definitely recommend one, we went with the smaller 3 moa(?) dot version, and it works well on a rifle. They are usually $250, but can sometimes catch em on sale for $200-220.

 

Na, my issued RMR gets an inspection and battery change every year at work. She’s been through a lot and keeps ticking along.

On my absolutely, positively gotta work rigs, I run trijicon ACOGs and RMRs with the exception of one romeo4t which i chose to go with rather than an aimpoint. On my not so "important" rigs, I've sort of gravitated toward the sig romeo5s. I haven't had one go belly up on me that.

That having been said, these days I just have my preferences but have seen very few that truly sucked and weren't worth the real estate on the gun. For what most people use them for, you can just pick your poison.

I don't think I'd trust my life to a $100 optic, but I don't know for sure that a $100 optic wouldn't do the job.

 

Mine must bee a trs25 since I have so many of them. they are cheap and they work. Bought the first one several years ago to put on my steal challenge 10/22. now have 4. for holo sites the Burris ff3 because I can see them (I have astigmatism) and they work.
