Your Favorite Rifle

Welllllll …………… when you consider that 95% of my shooting is 22lr ( maybe more if you think about the actual round count sent down range ) I would have to give the nod to one of my Marlin 39a’s
.

I had a Marlin 39A Mountie that was an absolute tack-driver! It was a nice, heavy rifle that never seemed to miss!

I had a Marlin 39A Mountie that was an absolute tack-driver! It was a nice, heavy rifle that never seemed to miss!

My wife reminded me about the first summer/fall we were married in 1965 and lived in the old family camp that summer. I used to use the 39 Mountie to shoot red squirrels out of the trees, so they wouldn't chomp their way into the camp. There were about 10 of them in the trees. The Mountie, with a receiver sight, was very deadly! The thing that bugged the wife was that I went out with only my skivvies on, but we were the only ones still in the neighborhood so not a problem!

Sporterized Model 1879 Trapdoor Springfield 45-70.
My Granddad bought it from Bannermans before the turn of the last century in anticipation of moving from MO and homesteading in Wyoming.

He fired it once here in Wyoming and put in the corner of the saddle room in the barn. He never cleaned it or fired it again.
It stood in that corner for 47 years.

When my Grandparents moved to town, my Dad and I were exploring the old homestead and I found the rifle. It was in terrible shape.
I was 4 years old and my Dad said I was too young to have something like that.
He put it in the corner of his closet at our ranch. It stood there untouched for another 22 years.

When my folks moved to town, I quit the Highway Patrol and moved to the ranch. I found the rifle again. The barrel was nearly rusted shut and the stock was dried and cracked.

I was able to obtain an unfired Trapdoor rifle barrel, and got a sporter stock blank from Rhinehart-Fajen and went work.
The result is a poor man's version of the Officer's Model Trapdoor.

I have killed Elk, Mule Deer, Antelope and an untold number of varmints with it.

One Sunday, I fired a 3 shot group from a bench at a target set up against a dirt bank at a 100 yards. There was one hole in the target. I dug down in the dirt and found the three 500 grain paper patched bullets welded together in a bunch.

That was the rifle not me.

A few years later Itchy and I were at a small rendezvous and another guy and I were shooting off hand at a full sized steel Buffalo silhouette at a
1000 yards.

Itchy, who is one hell of a shot, walked up and asked if she could try it.

I gave her a quick course on the gun and how to use the sights. She took the rifle put it to her shoulder, made some adjustments and fired.

She lowered the rifle and turned to me and asked "Did I mis....BONG!!!

She handed me the rifle and said "It's best to quit on a hit!" and walked away.

So this rifle has a lot of history and memories, and is my favorite rifle.

If not my German G43, then one of my .300BLKs. One is set-up for Supersonic and the other for Subs.

I have many but I suppose my very favorite is my 30-06 rolling block that I made from a block of 4140....
Awesome build!

Here are the photos in non-vertigo-inducing layout. ;)

Well I have an original Winchester 71 - 348 that has been altered somewhat, so collector value is out the window. But I bought it to use.
It’s a 20” carbine that has a full length magazine and came with a Monti Carlo check piece butt stock with a 12&1/2 inch pull. Has a nice Lyman steel receiver sight.
I was able to locate an original Winchester butt stock for a great deal of $20. Added a Decelerator recoil pad as there wasn’t any butt plate at all. I prefer a 14 to 14&1/2 inch length of pull anyway.
I’ve had over the years deluxe and standard 71’s but never warmed up to them much this carbine length rifle swings better and balances very well. It’s a keeper. IMG_0340.jpeg

1985 Marlin in 45-70. Good for snagglepus and yogi and both are in my area. See yogi more frequently than snagglepus but the latter is here and walks around in broad daylight.
