Although this is a handguns thread I would like to know how many of you use another type of gun as your first line of home defense? Thanks, Mike

Greeting's All-

My first line of home D' is a 12 gague Remington 870
Marine Magnum, currently stoked with Federal's # 4
and #00 buck-shot.

Of course, its backed with with a West German SIG-
Sauer P220A in .45 caliber; loaded with some
Remington (standard pressure) 185 grain JHP's.

If the perp is lucky enough to wade thru all that, then
there is six rounds of Federal's 110 grain "Hydra-Shok"
awaiting him/her, as fired from a Smith & Wesson 6"
model 686-5.

Additional home D includes: a .380 Walther PPK, a Smith
& Wesson (old model 60) in .38 special; and a stain
less steel Rossi (model 88, I think ?), also in .38 SPL
awaiting their demise.

U think I have enough firepower?

Best Wishes,

Hi Ala Dan - I think you've got plenty of firepower!:uhoh:

After 20 years of shooting handguns I have finally decided to add a shotgun to my home defense system and was really curious as to how many others also employ a shotgun for home defense. Best, Mike

MikeJ:

i think the determing factor for me is mobility

i think the shotgun is an excellent choice for HD when the primary concern is securing a fixed location (i.e. bedroom door, stairwell, hallway).

when mobility is required (like getting to the kids down the hall) i'd go to a handgun if possible

Prefer a good revolver or DA/SA auto that can be stored 'ready' but with the springs relaxed.

6-shooter

Like my Taurus 82 security guard turn-in for the 'bump in the night' gun. It's a 6-shot .38 spl. Military & Police copy with a surprisingly nice trigger.

No safety to switch off. No mag spring to set. DA pull=less chance for an accident at 3 a.m.

Easy to tell if loaded without manipulating the gun. No 'press check' necessary.

With rubber grips, soft-shooting, even with the potent 158 grain +P SWC. Fun & cheap to practice with, a good thing in a defense gun.

My situation doesn't lend itself to having a long gun at the ready.

Funny, there's a couple Glocks and a few S&W wheelguns in the safe. But the $165.00 Taurus is my 'save your bacon' piece.

(I know that following basic safety rules would negate some of my points-but I'm considering being woke up and not totallly alert at the time of threat-Mr. Murphy is my copilot!)

How about "all of the above"?

I've got:

a Remington shotgun loaded with #4 Buckshot (27 pellets are better than 9, right?)

a Makarov with 95 gr Hornady XTPs

and, as a last resort (because of overpenatration concerns) a Wichester Model 94 .30-30 with 110 gr JHPs

I'd go for the shotgun first, so thats what I voted for...

Was shotgun, but now handgun (Glock 19 right now).

I developed the need for restricted access, and that means GunVault.

For me my primary is my Mossberg 500 12g. 18â€bbl and sidesaddle loaded with light fieldloads and followed by 00buck and slugs on the buttstock carrier. I also have a flashlight and laser attachment. I have a 2.5pwr scope and see through scope rings for close use if needed. A Sp101 is also available.

98 lbs of German Shepard to start with. .40 Glock 22 with night sights, lasermax laser, Sure-Fire 6p flashlight, Corbon 135 gr hollowpoints. Second mag of Federal 165 gr Hydra-shocks. Gun vault locked up loaded Rem 870 12 ga stocked with high brass OO buck/flashlight on forearm. Cell phone on charger with the Glock/flashlight.

Mike,
My G30, loaded with Federal 230gr Hydroshocks, is inder my pillow. I also have two 10 round mags within reach on the dresser. My wife has a Ruger P95 loaded with 115gr Winchester USA hollow points within reach under the bed. She also has two 15 round mags beside it!! :D

We like being loaded for bear!! :what:

Dry heat my arse!!!

Mine is my Ruger KP-89 loaded with 124gr. HydraShok's. Don't own any long guns at the moment.

Well if the goblin makes it past my 90+ lb. Rottie, my primary HD gun right now is a Ruger GP-100 loaded with Speer 125gr+p 38spcl. I really do need to bring my shotgun up from the workshop.

First line HD firearm: Remington 870P Wingmaster shotgun loaded with three '00' buck capped with a Fiocchi 1 oz slug.

Backup: my 9mm HK USP, with a balanced cocktail of 115 gr & 147 gr Fiocchi FMJHP, and 125gr FMJ bullets.

We like being loaded for bear.

I have to be since they like to visit often.

My home defense consists of BHP on the floor next to the bed for two-legged critters and to fight my way across the room to the Brenneke stoked 870 for the four-legged kind.
Of course if things really go south I have a Daewoo K-2 with a loaded mag nearby.:D

My first line of defense is Mossberg 500 (PG/side folder) with alternating #8 shot and 000Buck.

Should that fail, I've got a 4" 686 with Hydra-Shoks and Crimson Trace grips batting second.

Next to the 686 in the nightstand is where my P32 usually resides at night. I say usually because it's at the smiths right now.

Batting clean-up, just in case the zombies attack in force, my SAR-1 is in a soft case under the bed with 5 loaded mags, 4x30 and 1x40.

First Line is the Springfield 1911-A1. That buys me time to fade back to the closet for the Maverick/Mossy 12Ga, w Rem 3" #4Buck--41 pellets a round.

After that, I'm going to the Most Serious Artillery...The US Rifle Cal .30 M-1 ...popularly known as The Garand

Primary: Glock 20 (10mm) with 6 in bbl and night sights
Secondary: Cold Steel Assegai (short handled Zulu spear)

Backup: Spouse with revolver, telephone, and 2 dogs.

Larry

My early warning system is a 3 1/2 lb Yorkie that hears everything in my neighborhood. Under my bed is a Winchester 1300 Defender with #00 buckshot. I have a Kimber within reach loaded with Winchester 230 gr JHP's. My wife has a .38 Colt Det Spl under her pillow loaded with Federal HydraShocks. I have an AK-47 in the front of my gun safe with 6 30 rnd mags. I can reach it fairly quickly but it's also my WTSHTF gun.
